A tour inside the luxurious Twin Palms Sungai Long residences

For seven decades, acclaimed developer Lum Chang has created many dream homes. Its latest project is nothing short of exceptional – Twin Palms Sungai Long.

Located at the south of Cheras, Malaysia, this area has seen a rise in the number of shopping centres and retail outlets, particularly as the Malaysian economy continued its strong growth momentum in 2017. In 2007, it began constructing its first five phases comprising of 300 plus landed units.

Now, Twin Palms is moving forward with its next two phases (a combination of semi-detached and bungalow units): Westiara and Latania. As those botanically savvy would have realised, these phases are named after two species of palm trees. Indeed, the name Twin Palms itself is an anagram of nine species of palm trees: Tsara, Westiara, Indica, Naria, Palmyra, Areca, Latania, Maya and Sierra. In turn, these also refer to each phase of the project’s launch.

LATANIA AND WESTERIA

Twin Palms Sungai Long is made up of a collection of landed properties: super-link homes, semi-detached and bungalow homes.

At Latania and Westiara, you will find luxurious and elegant semi-detached and bungalow homes built along quiet, tree-lined streets. With three storeys of generous spaces and a large driveway for parking three cars side-by-side, these homes are perfect for multi-generation living.

For Latania, these prestigious homes come in built-up options ranging from 3,371 sq ft to 4,017 sq ft. 28 units were launched in May 2017 from a price of RM 1.65 million.

Meanwhile, Westiara bungalows will be launched in August 2018, and will feature 19 units ranging from 4,453 sq ft to 10,052 sq ft. Prices start from RM 2.8 million.

GATES, NOT WALLS

At first glance, living in a gated community evokes a certain closed, walled-off atmosphere; yet it offers spacious parks and walkways to roam around the estate’s manicured gardens.

A well-secured home is a haven for all, especially those with little ones. Twin Palms Sungai Long offers strict 24/7 security and surveillance, with perimeter CCTV surrounding the entire development, 24-hour patrolling and access cards required at every entry and exit points. Furthermore, gated communities mean less traffic.

With a guardhouse acting as a stop point, and with Jalan Palma being the only road that winds lazily around Twin Palms, visitors and residents alike need not fear vehicles turning recklessly from busy main roads into the quiet neighbourhood.

Those with young ones will also benefit from this increased safety and security. Thus, residents are thus able to come home after a long day’s grind to a tranquil and safe domicile to unwind and recharge.

RESORT-STYLE LIVING

Twin Palms aims to create a resort-style living environment for its residents. As a resort home, the estate affords sylvan views of its manicured gardens and tree-lined walkways. There are plenty of benches to allow residents to take in the vistas, or perhaps, enjoy a light jog around the Linear park.

For elderly residents, a leisurely walk around the park after dinner beckons. The lush greenery surrounding the park is part of a decade’s work of nurturing the natural landscape around Twin Palms. As an all-encompassing sanctuary, residents are also able to socialise with each other through purposeful events that the management will hold frequently for the community.

Such community-based activities will include the Twin Palms Family Day, Scavenger Hunts, Get Together Makan- Makan, Dato’ Joey Yap Feng Shui Talk, Twin Palms Chinese New Year Festivities, etc.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

For families, having to commute in and out of the estate for work and play scenarios will be a main deciding factor when purchasing a Twin Palm unit.

But take heart as the estate is close to SILK highway, Grand Saga Cheras-Kajang Expressway, Lekas Highway, and the upcoming East Klang Valley Expressway (EKVE) due to be completed in September 2019. Driving to town, sending the children to school or going out of the estate for work appointments will be a breeze.

SELF-CONTAINED LIVING

One of the merits of living in a gated community is the clubhouse. Twin Palms’ Orinoco Clubhouse offers plenty of features to soak up Vitamin D, unwind, get sporty, and perhaps, get 120 PALACE creative as a family.

The infinity pool and children’s wading pool will be perfect for families to bond over swimming and other water-based activities. Adults can head to the glass-lined gymnasium to burn calories or just chill with a mocktail at the poolside café.

The spa – sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi – is another ideal zone to relax and sweat it out after a hard day’s work. Other features for sporting activities such as badminton, table tennis, and basketball can be enjoyed at the multi-purpose hall. The well-designed children’s playground will ensure tiny tots get their dose of outdoor physical benefits.

RESTFUL RESPITE

Twin Palms is a lifestyle proposition that’s geared for individuals, families or couples who desire a resort-style home Roads lined with trees leading into Twin Palms that offers modern amenities for work and play situations.

Its lush, open surroundings convey that you’re far away from the hubbub of city life, yet it affords security, comfort and enjoyment, all thanks to its raft of modern living features that the estate boasts.

A look inside the Rado DiaMaster Petite Seconde Automatic Watch

Always one to break conventions when creating new masterpieces, Rado introduces the new Rado DiaMaster Petite Seconde Automatic, which has now been stamped with COSC certification.

And for those who do not know, COSC is the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute that certifies the accuracy and precision of wristwatches in Switzerland.

Celebrated as the “Master of Materials”, the new 2018 DiaMaster Petite Seconde
Automatic COSC highlights the use of plasma high-tech ceramic, which is a new scratch-resistant ceramic that showcases a metallic look without actually using metal materials, and combining it with silicon.

And it is because of the use of silicon as a hairspring, placed at the heart of the new DiaMaster Petite Seconde, that helped the new DiaMaster acquire the COSC approval and promising the utmost precision in time-telling.

With the classic rounded 43 mm DiaMaster case, the DiaMaster Petite Seconde
Automatic COSC focuses on the beauty of purity with minimal design and an open, clear-reading dial paired with a sleek crocodile print leather strap.

Another highlight of the new timepiece is the Small Second complication, placed on the 6 o’clock position of the Diamaster, which also highlights the COSC certification where it runs within -4/+6 seconds over a 24-hour period.

And with the light and durable high tech ceramic, the body of the watch gives off a delicate and unique finishing, whose colour borders between steel and gunmetal – a true stand-out for the wrist.

My Super Petrel is the exclusive seaplane exhibitor at Penang Rendezvous 2018

Penang Rendezvous 2018 welcomes My Super Petrel to its four-day luxury event at Straits Quay Marina Penang this July 2018.

Set to take place between 26th to 29th July, Penang Rendezvous is a comprehensivhe showcase of yachts, supercars, seaplanes, helicopters, watches, properties, fine cognac, and art for aficionados, existing clients, and prospects.

And among the showcase is My Super Petrel, our exclusive seaplane exhibitor for 2018.

Along with over 20 yachts by key partners Pen Marine (including Princess Yachts, Jeanneau, Leopard catamarans, Amel), Simpson Marine (Monte Carlo Yachts, Beneteau Oceanis and Gran Turismo, Lagoon catamarans) and Hong Seh Marine (Ferretti yachts and Cranchi), the showcase is a true spectacle to behold.

In anticipation of that, we interview Evgeny Savelyev of My Super Petrel, to share his thoughts about operating amphibian aircraft in Malaysia, and his favourite haunts in the area to cruise.

Interview with Evgeny Savelyev of My Super Petrel

Since when have you been operating your Seaplane in Malaysia?

We have been operating amphibian aircrafts in Malaysia since November 2014.

What kind of customers do you have?

All our customers are very special people. By now, we have 8 persons and 10 different types of aircraft in our group.

Most of the guys are supercar owners. They look at the possibility to fly as an expansion of their extreme life horizons.

Which are the favourite destinations in Malaysia that your customers wish to experience?

The most enjoyable among us are flights to lakes and islands. There are many beautiful places which are very difficult to reach by normal transport, but very easy by seaplane.

Any special memory of a special flight that made you feel good flying the Seaplane?

I love to fly in Langkawi. In this area, you can really enjoy all the benefits of an amphibian aircraft. The best pictures of our aircraft are made in Langkawi.

You will be exhibiting the Seaplane at the PENANG RENDEZVOUS 2018, what are your expectations there?

We expect to meet many new friends and really hope that some of them will join our group of “tropical aviation lifestyle enthusiasts”.

As a Russian living in Malaysia, what are your favourite spots across the country? Langkawi, Penang, Borneo, others?

Langkawi, Royal Belum, Perak, and Pangkor.

What would you recommend to people wanting to buy a Seaplane in Malaysia? How tough is legislation, and how long does it take to learn flying?

I would say that Malaysia has brilliant opportunities for those who want to become pilots. There is no other country in Asia where you can enjoy flying so much. It’s hard to find such a nice place like Malaysia where you can fly so free. We are actually flying everywhere. And we have pictures to show that!

Interview: John Tan, World of Rewards Founder

In anticipation of the coming Penang Rendezvous, happening from 26 to 29 July 2018, we caught up with its partners, John Tan, the founder of World of Rewards, John Tan to talk about his business and what he is bringing to the table for the coming event.

For those unfamiliar, World of Rewards is an innovative and progressive organization specializing in B2B and B2C rewards programs.

This year, they are bringing their networks and expertise to Straits Quay Retail Marina in Penang, Malaysia for the luxury exclusive event. From concepts of luxury travel to some of his favourite travel destinations, find out more about John Tan in the interview below:

You are the founder of World of Rewards, tell us about how this concept came to life?

Having been in the travel industry for many years, I have observed the significant changes and growth driven by technology and diversity, especially over the last decade. It is an environment where avid travellers and vacation goers are spoilt with choices and constantly looking out for value-added benefits.

The concept of World of Rewards is to combine the benefits of travel and carefully selected gifts and rewards through the use of technology and delivery of excellent services to our partners and clientele.

How bespoke can you design a trip? Can your clients ask for any destination they want?

Through strategic partnerships with over 200,000 established resorts and hotels as well as international cruise lines and ground operators, we are able to custom design a trip for our clients in over 80 countries.

Tell us what are the top 3 favourite holiday destinations amongst your clientele in Malaysia?

While the trend for favourite destinations may vary over the years for our Malaysian clientele, the most consistent top 3 would be Oceania, Far East and the Mediterranean.

What is your personal favourite country when looking at a week-long escape?

My personal favourites would be Thailand and Switzerland. But I would always enjoy a local week-long escape back to Penang island and the east coast of Malaysia.

You are originally from Penang, and you will be exhibiting at the Penang RendezVous 2018. What will you be presenting at this upscale event staged July 26 to 29 at Straits Quay marina?

It always feels good to be back ‘home’ and I am indeed very excited about the Penang Rendezvous 2018. We take pride in being able to participate and will be presenting a wide range of niche products with our program partners. Luxury yacht charters, international cruises and exotic water chalets just to name a few.

Penang has changed tremendously over the past 15 years. What are your views on the development of the island over the next 10 years?

I am very much looking forward to a sustainable and responsible development for my beloved island in the years to come. Penang Island has always been a place where development, technology and nature can coexist harmoniously and I hope it remains that way.

Your view on the concept of luxury travel: more privacy, more bespoke experiences or simply being able to head to faraway and untouched lands?

My view on the concept of luxury travel is the freedom and ability to travel wherever you want to, whether alone or with your loved ones. There is a rising trend of being as far away as possible from society and to be disconnected. But it’s the experience and journey that counts for me.

3 reasons cryptocurrencies were made for Southeast Asia

(Story adapted from CryptoInvestor.Asia)

Maria Santos is visibly nervous. She uses a well-worn handkerchief to dab at beads of sweat which have formed on her brow under the oppressive noonday sun in the sweltering heat that is downtown Manila.

The octogenarian has been receiving payments regularly from her daughter Esther who works as a domestic helper in Singapore the same way for close to two decades and the money has always arrived the same way – through a string of intermediaries which with fees costing anywhere between 7 and 10 percent of the money which Esther sends across to Maria.

These fees contribute to a global honeypot of $38 billion in fees paid annually on remittances. (The remittance market is US$500 billion annually and average fees of 7.7 percent work out to approximately US$38 billion a year.)

Domestic workers lining up at a money remittance branch at a shopping mall popular with Filipino domestic workers in Singapore’s Orchard Road.

#1 The Value Transfer Revolution

For every $200 that Esther sends home, as much as $20 will be gone by the time it reaches her mother in Manilla. While $20 is the cost of bus fare and a meal in Singapore, in Manila it could buy food for a week. Over her lifetime, Esther has paid thousands of dollars to intermediaries such as Western Union to send money home.

But today is different, which is why Maria is nervous.

Enter Abra and companies like it. Abra is a decentralized smartphone application which leverages the blockchain to facilitate money transfers. Esther and her mother both downloaded the Abra app to their Android smart phones. Esther’s balance to start was in dollars. At the tap of a button, Esther converted the dollars to Bitcoins and initiated the transfer to Maria who got it in Bitcoins, almost instantly. At this point, Maria had the choice of keeping Bitcoins as a store of value on her phone or converting the Bitcoin to pesos. By creating a payment mechanism and store of value, Abra effectively displaces the conventional banking system’s two must lucrative roles – payments and value storage.

But Maria’s story doesn’t end there – she wants cash. Maria pays her rent, buys her food and ironically, tops up her prepaid mobile SIM card using cash. She checks the Abra app and notices there are four other Abra users within a four-block radius of her. She messages them all to see who will exchange her pesos (which have since been converted from Bitcoin by Abra) for their services. One person will do it for 3 percent, another for 2 percent, and two more for 1.5 percent. Maria decides to go with the one offering 2 percent, not because it’s the cheapest (it’s not) but because the exchanger had a 5-star rating and agreed to meet her halfway. They meet and she swaps her Abra pesos for physical pesos and both walk away happy. Abra takes 0.25 percent on conversion and the whole process costs Maria well under 3 percent. “I get it now! That’s really cool!” says Maria, ecstatically.

The entire process, from the money leaving Singapore to Maria in the Philippines takes less than an hour and depending on who Maria chooses to do the swap from Bitcoin to pesos, will cost her well under 3 percent, or less than half of the lowest amount she would have paid through a traditional money transfer. Whereas every Western Union transaction requires up to seven or eight intermediaries, corresponding banks, local banks, Western Union, the individual agents, the Abra transaction required only three – two peers and the Abra platform.

But that’s not even considering the amount of time that has been saved by both Maria and Esther. Whereas Esther can expect to wait up to two hours in line at Singapore’s Lucky Plaza, home to dozens of money transfer agents, Maria in Manila would have had to line up to receive the money as well.

With the number of migrant workers across Asia, the savings of time and money from utilizing the blockchain to facilitate the transfer of value is very real.

According to KPMG, in 2016, only 27 percent of Southeast Asia’s population had a bank account. That’s some 438 million unbanked people. In countries like Cambodia, the number of unbanked people soars to 95 percent. Which is why the blockchain revolution is so critical to Southeast Asia and its estimated 20.2 million migrant workers.

Southeast Asia is one of the most linguistically, culturally and racially diverse regions in the world, making it an excellent proving ground for cryptocurrencies.

#2 The Diversity of Southeast Asia is the Clarion Call for Crypto

With a population of over 640 million people and a GDP of US$2.56 trillion, Southeast Asia represents a rare opportunity for the cryptocurrency revolution as a means of value transfer. Strategically located with China to the East and Europe and India to the West, Southeast Asia straddles some of the oldest and most lucrative trading routes.

But Southeast Asia is also a diverse region, with no less than 11 sovereign countries, 800 native languages and over 22 different ethnic groups. Despite that level of diversity, the nations of Southeast Asia have generally lived in peace with one another, with conflicts limited to minor border skirmishes and territorial disputes.

That peace has ensured robust economic growth with the Asian Development Bank expecting Southeast Asia to grow 5.0 percent in 2017 and 5.1 percent in 2018. As the people of Southeast Asia become richer, they are also expected to trade more with each other, but Southeast Asia has no less than 11 different currencies, with less developed regions using the U.S. dollar as their primary currency, making cross-border trade particularly challenging given foreign exchange fees. Which is why many cross-border transactions are denominated in U.S. dollars.

Yet for a region as large as Southeast Asia, with a population almost double the United States, to base its cross-border trade on the vagaries of the U.S. Federal Reserve is risky at best and a surrender of sovereignty at worst.

Southeast Asia represents a tremendous opportunity for crypto advocates and enthusiasts to subscribe to a medium for value exchange that is independent of any foreign sovereign entity. With the region’s internet economy at an estimated US$50 billion at the end of 2017, more than half of Southeast Asians are monthly active internet users, leaving tremendous potential for growth, but providing the foundation for significant adoption of both cryptocurrency usage and cryptoasset trading. Southeast Asia has the opportunity to bypass the internet banking revolution and go straight to mobile value transfer the same way Africa avoided costly copper telephone lines and went straight to mobile.

Apps like Abra are well-positioned to harness that growth in mobile internet usage and the favorable regulatory climate adopted by global financial centers such as Singapore towards cryptocurrencies ensures that the seeds of the crypto revolution will continue to grow.

The Singapore skyline. Singapore serves as Southeast Asia’s legal and financial center.

#3 The Legal & Financial Center in the Heart of Asia

At the heart of the crypto revolution, is the legal and financial center that is Singapore. On March 15, Ravi Menon, the Managing Director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), suggested that there is no reason why cryptocurrencies could not be accepted as money in the future. Speaking at the Money 20/20 Asia conference held in Singapore for global payments and financial services industry players, he emphasized that cryptocurrency activities in Singapore “do not currently prose a significant risk to financial stability.”

The pronouncement from the head of the central bank of Singapore is significant and demonstrates the enlightened and practical approach taken by one of the world’s leading financial centers. Singapore has long served as the region’s leader in the areas finance and technology and it’s clear from the pronouncements by the MAS chief that it intends to lead the way in the realm of fintech and crytpocurrencies as well.

But it’s not all free-wheeling unbridled crypto-capitalism in Singapore. On November 14 last year, the MAS  issued a statement stating that tokens sold through the blockchain funding model, otherwise known as Initial Coin Offerings or ICOs, may be considered securities under certain circumstances, citing Singapore’s Securities and Futures Act (SFA) as well as the Financial Advisers Act.

According to the MAS,

“OFFERS OR ISSUES OF DIGITAL TOKENS MAY BE REGULATED BY MAS IF THE DIGITAL TOKENS ARE CAPITAL MARKETS PRODUCTS UNDER THE SFA. CAPITAL MARKETS PRODUCTS INCLUDE ANY SECURITIES, FUTURES CONTRACTS AND CONTRACTS OR ARRANGEMENTS FOR PURPOSES OF LEVERAGED FOREIGN EXCHANGE TRADING.”

The new report includes several case studies, including one detailing a token tied to a computing power-sharing platform (which wouldn’t count as a security) and another that is focused on a token connected to a startup investment fund (which would count as a security).

Ravi Menon, Managing Director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore. The MAS chief has said that it’s not impossible for cryptocurrencies to become mainstream. (Photo credit: Reuters file photo)

The guidelines also shore up earlier statements from the MAS. In August last year, officials stated that some token sales would be subject to securities laws on the basis that the cryptographic data sold would constitute kinds of debentures or stakes in collective investment schemes.

Further, the MAS said in its new guidelines that other Singapore laws may apply to token sales, including the ones that don’t ultimately come under its direct jurisdiction. The report adds,

“DIGITAL TOKENS THAT PERFORM FUNCTIONS WHICH MAY NOT BE WITHIN MAS’ REGULATORY PURVIEW MAY NONETHELESS BE SUBJECT TO OTHER LEGISLATION FOR COMBATING MONEY LAUNDERING AND TERRORISM FINANCING.”

In the area of money laundering and terrorism financing in particular, the MAS said that it would move to develop a new payments service framework that would cover companies involved in “the dealing or exchange of virtual currencies for fiat or other virtual currencies,” adding,

“SUCH INTERMEDIARIES WILL BE REQUIRED TO PUT IN PLACE POLICIES, PROCEDURES AND CONTROLS TO ADDRESS SUCH RISKS. THESE WILL INCLUDE REQUIREMENTS TO CONDUCT CUSTOMER DUE DILIGENCE, MONITOR TRANSACTIONS, PERFORM SCREENING, REPORT SUSPICIOUS TRANSACTIONS AND KEEP ADEQUATE RECORDS.”

The clarity provided by the MAS is timely and helps to provide certainty to a vibrant and growing crypto-sphere in the region. By making clear, unambiguous statements about the sort of activities that will come under the ambit of other laws and stating with clarity the examples that will not come under the purview of securities laws, MAS is ensuring just that level of legislation that will enhance growth in the space without stifling creativity.

A study by Funderbeam indicates that ICO funding started gaining traction in 2016 and exploded in 2017, where the funding increased from US$228 million to US$2.6 billion. In 2017, North America and Asia, when compared to Europe, have rounds almost twice as large, with average ICO rounds in North America valued at US$31.5 million, Asia averaging US$30.7 million and Europe averaging US$16.7 million.

The approach has rocketed Singapore to the world’s third largest ICO market globally, behind the United States and Switzerland. Last year, Japan’s Quione, the first licensed global cryptocurrency exchange in Japan, launched its ICO in Singapore which was oversubscribed and raised US$105 million in investment proceeds. When asked about how Singapore had emerged as an Asian ICO center, Mike Kayamori, co-founder and CEO of Quoine, explained,

“I THINK IT IS BECAUSE THE MAS HAS DONE A GOOD JOB COMMUNICATING WITH THE CRYPTO COMMUNITY. THEY HAVE ALREADY MADE SEVERAL OFFICIAL COMMENTS, ESPECIALLY AROUND ICOS. I THINK IT WILL CONTINUE TO BE A DESTINATION, ESPECIALLY FOR TOKEN ISSUERS.”

Singapore also protects less-sophisticated investors from the vagaries that are so closely associated with the crypto markets. For instance, ordinary investors are limited to transactions of S$3,000 a month through Xfers accounts, the only way to transfer money to Coinbase or CoinHako to purchase crypto currencies using a Singapore bank account. Whilst there are no regulations per se limiting these platforms to such numbers, one wonders why these profit-making behemoths would limit the transaction values of would-be cryptocurrency purchasers without some external pressure.

Overall, the Singapore approach is enlightened and serves as an example for the rest of Southeast Asia to follow. But with clear and well-defined laws, a stable government and an excellent judiciary, Singapore serves the role of clearing house for ICOs from all across Southeast Asia, adding to its already heady GDP growth.

Cryptocurrencies to Rule Them All?

Given the specific geo-political and demographic conditions of Southeast Asia, cryptocurrencies and cryptoassets have the potential to lift the region from economic potential to economic powerhouse. One of the biggest aspirations of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a regional grouping of nations which includes, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia has been a common currency, similar to the likes of the Euro. But the experience of the Euro, the fallout for Greece and the sheer diversity in terms of stage of development of the individual Southeast Asian economies means that a common currency remains a pipe dream. Enter cryptocurrencies. Owned by everyone but controlled by no one, technically, cryptocurrencies can plug the gap to draw ASEAN closer together both politically and economically.

The time is ripe for cryptocurrencies and the time is ripe for ASEAN to embrace them. Keep calm and crypto.

A detailed look at the Bell & Ross BR01 Laughing Skull

When we talk about Bell & Ross, one of the staples we are most fond of is the iconic Skull series and this 2018 marks the 10th anniversary of the legendary timepiece.

First launched in 2009, we have seen many variations of the Skull silhouette, one that extends beyond the BR01 aviation aesthetics, like the BR01 Burning Skull and the BR01 Tourbillon Skull.

And to celebrate its 10th birthday, Bell & Ross unveils yet another iconic masterpiece – the BR01 Laughing Skull –, which is also the watchmaker’s first venture into the field of automata.

Unlike all its predecessors, the new BR01 Laughing Skull brings a new surprise to your wrist, one where the mandible moves and have the skull grinning back at you with mischief.

Powered by the Br-CAL.206 calibre, which is also entirely produced by Bell & Ross, the skull’s mandible gets animated during its winding process and features 4 bridges that secure the main plate to the casing to create a floating effect at the centre.

And all these are made possible with Bell & Ross’s savoir-faire in applying the same technology used in 14th-century mechanical clocks to create the laughing mechanism of the skull.

For the BR01 Laughing Skull, the piece de resistance of the timepiece is the intricate dial design, which is created using metal appliqué and embossed beautifully. And adding to that is the revised sword-shaped hands, a staple within the Skull series, that are now skeletonised and coated in SuperLuminova.

And to finish it off, Bell & Ross cases this masterpiece in microblasted steel and decorating it with “Clous de Paris” finishing, a type of guilloché pattern that is made possible only with a special machinery.

Limited to only 500 pieces worldwide, the Bell & Ross BR01 Laughing Skull is one made with connoisseurs who desire unique and original timepieces in mind.

And with the new techniques and concepts applied to the Laughing Skull, the timepiece makes the perfect celebratory creation to further showcase Bell & Ross’s pioneering stand in the world of Haute Horlogerie.

The Bell & Ross BR01 Laughing Skull timepiece is limited to 500 pieces worldwide and is now retailing at RM43,400.

It goes without saying that Switzerland is the place to be for snow-capped mountains and Lucerne is the city that marks the starting point of the Swiss Alps with a long list of amazing snow-capped wonders.

And a must on our the list is Mount Titlis that peaks at 3,020 metres above sea level in the quaint alpine town of Engelberg, it is the perfect place for extreme sports enthusiasts as it even offers mountain biking and devil biking in the summer months.

For winter months and skiing aside, you can opt for to walk deep inside the glacier caves in Titlis, which is a wondrous nature’s spectacle. Maybe take a ride on its Ice Flyer to see the winter wonderland on bird’s eye view or be adventurous and sign up for the Titlis cliff walk!

And Mount Titlis also has the Titlis Rotair, which is the world’s first revolving cable car that you can use to ascend to the winter wonderland.

The Lucerne Old Town

Within Lucerne itself, the place you need to spend at least a day or two in, is the Old Town area, where the most historical landmarks of the city lie, alongside various retail shops and dining spots.

In Lucerne’s Old Town, one of the things to feast your eyes on are the various wall paintings on the architecture scattered in the area, where some even date back to the 17th-century.

And contrasting these medieval murals are the many international and local retailers that found home within the structures and, of course, souvenir shops where you can pick up some gifts for friends and family.

While in the area, remember to take a short hike up the hills to the Zyt CLock Tower, one of the three towers left on a stretch of medieval wall. Here, you can even go inside the tower to marvel at the inner clockwork mechanism!

The Iconic Architectures of Lucerne

When in Lucerne, there are a few important monuments and architectures you absolutely need to see and the first is definitely the Kapellbrücke (or the Chapel Bridge), which is a wooden footbridge that dates back to the 14th century.

A bridge that connects the Old Town and the New Town neighbourhoods, the Kapellbrücke is also an important historical landmark that houses over 150 17th century paintings that depict the history and culture of Lucerne.

And right next to the bridge in the New Town side is the Jesuit Church, an iconic architecture that features a 17th-century Baroque interior that will blow your mind away with its arched ceilings, murals and decor.

Last but certainly not least is the Lion Monument, a legendary landmark that is famed across the globe that is sculpted to commemorate the Swiss Guards who perished during the French Revolution.

Lucerne, The Swiss City of Music

And wrapping up our guide to Lucerne, let’s look at the love for music in this city. If Basel is the city known for its watch-making conventions, then Lucerne is definitely the hub of music in Switzerland, all thanks to the Lucerne Festival, a month-long celebration of all things music.

Comparable to Salzburg in Germany, Lucerne Festival highlights some of the best orchestras, conductors and soloists from around the world including the Vienna Philharmonic and they are all held inside the contemporary landmark of the city, Culture and Convention Center Lucerne (KKL).

Classic music aside, the Lucerne festival also celebrates contemporary and modern music with its many featured events during the festival. A must if you’re in the city in August.

See what the first Tom Ford watch collection is all about

He is known for his provocative ways in fashion in the ’90s and has also brought art to the film industry in the 2000s.

Now Tom Ford is ready to venture into the world of haute horology with the debut of his first timepiece collection – the Tom Ford 001 Watches.

An avid watch collector himself, Ford brings more than a little knowledge to bear on his eponymous 001 Watch. The sophisticated Swiss-made timepieces are finally launching to join Ford’s timeless empire of ready to wear, sunglasses, fragrance, handbags, and makeup.

For this watch collection, there will be two sizes available, in a variety of case materials such as 18-karat yellow gold and matte black DLC. The collection also features 62 interchangeable strap options in 30 shades – from hand-woven braided leather, pebbled grain leather to alligator skin.

Colours span from neutrals like black, cognac, nude to brights like cerulean and saffron, which Ford emphasises that characterizes it as a uni-sex watch.

The watch is built alongside with Bedrock Manufacturing, the company behind Shinola and Filson. Ford’s pieces may thus be designed with Ronda calibres with quartz, which is the supplier of the base movements used in Shinola and Filson watches.

However, little is revealed on the movement from the release and we wait on Tom Ford for further details.

Depending on an individual’s configuration, prices will range from $2,190 to $10,100. Catch the release here.

Dinosaur skeletons are the new pièce de résistance for your home

If you are ever looking for new home decor for that wow factor, then why not consider a dinosaur skeleton to be your new pièce de résistance.

Because just recently, Paris held an exclusive auction for avid collectors for two huge dinosaur skeletons,  an allosaurus and a diplodocus, along with 87 other lots of natural artefacts.

“The fossil market is no longer just for scientists,” said Iacopo Briano of Binoche et Giquello, the auction house for the two dinosaurs.

The Italian expert claims that they have become “real objects of decoration, like paintings”, citing Hollywood actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Nicolas Cage as fans of such ornaments.

Expected to cost around £480,000 for the diplodocus and £650,000 for the allosaurus, these dinosaur skeletons are some of the first few to arrive in the market for collectors this year.

In an upcoming auction in June, there will be another huge skeleton of a theropod, expected to auction for up to 1.5 million euros.

While the rarity, verification and completeness of these collections are common determinants of the price they fetch, there are a few more that affect the auction.

Carnivores such as the allosaurus fetch more than herbivores such as the diplodocus due to their prominent sharp teeth. Consider the price of the allosaurus that is considered “small” at 3.8 metres long compared to its fellow auction member diplodocus that stands at thrice the size at 12 metres long.

With an increasing fan base notably the Chinese, these new bidders are now competing against multinational corporations, the “typical” buyers of dinosaur skeletons. In 1997, McDonald’s and Walt Disney were among donors who contributed to the €6.75 million to buy Sue – the most complete and best-preserved Tyrannosaurus rex – for the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. ‘Millions of people come to see it, it’s incredible publicity for companies,’ said Eric Mickeler, a natural history expert.

Around five dinosaur skeletons go to auction around the world each year.

Chopard jewellery and watches are now made of ethical gold

Sustainability has always been a core value for Chopard for more than 30 years and in its latest effort for the cause, Chopard will start the use of ethical gold for its collection.

Starting from July 2018 onwards, every single watch and jewellery made by the Maison will use 100% ethical gold, as announced by Chopard Co-Presidents Caroline and Karl-Friedrich Scheufele at Baselworld 2018.

The ethical gold Chopard uses to craft its jewellery and watches will be sourced from mines participating in the Swiss Better Gold Association (SBGA), Fairmined and Fairtrade schemes as well as RJC Chain of Custody gold, which all meet the international best practice environmental and social standards.

In an effort to contribute to artisanal gold miners’ improvement initiatives and to grow the volumes of ethical gold extraction, Chopard joined SBGA in 2017.

As one of the members of the Responsible Jewellery Council, the Swiss brand is in full control of the entire processes, from manufacturing to the final product.

At the press conference Caroline Scheufele says, “As a family run business, ethics have always been an important part of our family philosophy. Naturally, we have always put ethics at the heart of the values of Chopard”.

On top of the announcement, Chopard’s Green Carpet High Jewellery collection made of Fairmined gold made its first appearance at Baselworld along with High Horlogery L.U.C Full Strike watch and Happy Palm watch as the family-owned Maison slowly march into a new era of ethical gold usage.

Interview: Emily Teh on the best of Straits Quay, Penang

A spectacular establishment to behold, Straits Quay Marina is one of the most coveted spaces in Penang Island and set to be the host of the inaugural Penang Rendezvous 2018, a one-of-a-kind, four-day luxury lifestyle experience.

And ahead of this exciting event in July 2018, we met with Emily Teh, Senior General Manager, Group Projects & Property Investment at Eastern & Oriental Berhad (the proprietor of Straits Quay Marina) to have an exclusive insight on the marina and see what it has to offer to its patrons.

What is the key concept behind Straits Quay Marina and when was it established?

Opened in May 2011, the Straits Quay Marina was conceptualised as a festive marina to bring together the best of Penang and the sea.

Realising this is its mix of retail partners, which is a blend of the island’s colour, culture and world-famous cuisine, all enhanced by the magic of the sea.

How unique is this marina on the Malaysian landscape?

Marinas, in most parts of the world, are generally big and fully utilitarian in the sense that they come with all the necessary amenities and facilities catered towards the nautical experience.

However, the Straits Quay Marina is more intimately sized and it is designed for leisure and targeted at a wider audience beyond the boating fraternity. For the general public, Straits Quay is a picturesque sea-fronting space for the local community and festive events, as well as a favoured venue for the arts and leisure crowd.

For Straits Quay, there are many visiting yachts. What are the services provided for them?

There are 40 wet berths at the Straits Quay Marina, complete with facilities provided for the marina customers such as a Boaters’ Lounge, shower rooms and laundry machines, all of which are conveniently situated right off the Marina Management Office and Information Centre.

There are also convenience stores available to cater to the supplies refill needs of the boaters. While ancillary services are not provided, yachts requiring haul out and repair may count on the shipyards located in the island and also, the Marina Management team is always within reach to assist in any way possible.

You are located in Penang, one of the most vibrant touristic destinations in Malaysia, how does Straits Quay Marina integrate itself within the vibes surrounding the island and its rich heritage?

Straits Quay blends in seamlessly with old and new Penang in many ways.

Architecturally, the retail marina draws its inspiration from the island’s grand colonial heritage, with wrought-iron filigree work reminiscent of the iconic Eastern & Oriental (E&O) Hotel.

Sitting amidst a world-class township, its classic façade presents a unique view of the island’s past and future. As Penang’s first and only sea-fronting retail marina, Straits Quay has become a must-visit destination for tourists, showcasing several unique attractions to complement other tourist offerings on the island.

What are the key highlights of Straits Quay?

For art and culture buffs visiting Penang and wishing to catch a performance, there is
penangpac in Straits Quay, the first of its kind performing arts centre in Penang and the
northern region.

There is also the iconic lighthouse at Straits Quay houses the E&O Visitor Centre, which is designed to take you through the evolution of E&O in the context of Penang’s transformation through the centuries.

Apart from the constant offerings mentioned above, there are year-long events and activities at Straits Quay, conducted to keep both tourists and the local communities entertained including Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta, St. Patrick’s Day Parade & Festival, New Year’s Eve countdown parties and, of course, the coming Penang Rendezvous.

We have noticed some art galleries at Straits Quay marina. What are the other retail experiences offered?

Apart from Ming Art showcasing high-quality Chinese ceramics and artworks from the 19th and 20th century, Nasim and Kashmir are two outlets where you can pick up handcrafted high-quality carpets or wood carved new and antique furniture.

There is also The Art Room where local and foreign artists take turns to feature their collections.

Straits Quay Marina will play host to the upcoming Penang Rendezvous in May 2018. How do you see such a large scale event to be held here?

Straits Quay Marina has hosted several nautical and lifestyle events in the past, where featured elements include luxury cars, motorbikes and a light aircraft! Events like these are popular with both locals and tourists alike – be it an opportunity for the boating enthusiasts to invest or upgrade their interests or for the community at large to come and marvel at these leisure beauties up close.

So, naturally, we are very excited to be hosting Penang Rendezvous as we believe the reception will be even greater.

As Penang Rendezvous promises to bring together bigger and more beautiful boats, along with other luxury offerings, fringe attractions and events, it will definitely a much-anticipated event for marine enthusiasts in the region as well as Penang residents in general.

Hence, we are looking forward to working very closely with Penang Rendezvous organisers to ensure planning and coordination of this event are well supported and successfully executed.

Before we end, let’s talk about other projects that Eastern & Oriental are working on.

Works for Seri Tanjung Pinang Phase 2 (STP2) are ongoing now.

To create a thriving local community on the island based on a live-work-play model, STP2’s proposed concept masterplan features components such as new waterfront promenade areas; park and ride facilities; leisure and cultural facilities; a waterfront square lined with F&B outlets and even a network of green spaces.

An international marina and yacht club are also expected to augment the waterfront lifestyle proposition of STP2.
