Jeff Goldblum Unleashed at The Tiffany Men’s Pop-Up Shop on NYC 57th Street

In 1961, Audrey Hepburn’s portrayal of Holly Golightly in the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s immortalised American luxury jeweller Tiffany & Co. allowing the brand to extend its presence beyond jewel cases and boutiques and into a shared cultural consciousness spanning themed parties and references in popular culture ad infinitum. Thankfully today, gentlemen get to have their own emblem of sophistication and elegance – the ever stylish, sexiest man of the decade – Jeff Goldblum.

On a Friday night last October, Tiffany & Co. celebrated the launch of its first-ever men’s collection with Goldblum headlining the very manly yet elegantly appointed debut of Tiffany Men’s collection of gentlemanly accoutrements – from pool tables right down to men’s accessories like dog tags and cuff links (which incidentally made an appearance at Dover Street Markets around the world, LA and Singapore among them). For one night, the brand set our reigning masculine sex symbol into The Tiffany Men’s Pop-Up Shop, located at 6 East 57th Street (incidentally the street where Goldblum grew up on), showcasing the new Tiffany Men’s collection.

Jeff Goldblum Unleashed at The Tiffany Men’s Pop-Up Shop on NYC 57th Street

“I was thinking, this is on 57th Street, and the first place I lived in New York was on 57th Street…and here I am, decades later, after hours at the Tiffany Men’s Pop-Up Shop. I feel very honoured.” – Jeff Goldblum.

The embodiment of its hypermasculine look book, Jeff Goldblum indulged in a spot of Christmas shopping, perusing the wares of the Tiffany’s Mens Collection and extraordinary objects from A Very, Very Tiffany Holiday at the Pop-Up Shop located at 6 East 57th Street. Tiffany & Co.’s first men’s collection in close to a century (they made Officer’s Sabres and other assorted military hardware in the early days) were designed by Tiffany & Co. Chief Artistic Officer Reed Krakoff, who described his vision as being “direct and uncomplicated.” No flash, no fuss. Finally, fancy men can wear diamonds without feeling self-conscious.

While Tiffany’s women’s oriented accessories and assorted offerings were often associated with the glamour of the Hollywood starlet and her perceived lifestyle (right down to pop up bakeries and cafes where one can have literal breakfasts at Tiffany’s), the Men’s collection finally finds voice in its sensual Sexagenarian; Sporting pieces from the new Tiffany Men’s collection—as well as a dazzling Tiffany diamond brooch —the actor and musician tours the Tiffany Men’s Pop-Up Shop in pure Goldblumesque fashion.

His staccato style dialogue adding a touch of levity to his escapes around multi-storey 6 East 57th Street store showcasing the new Tiffany Men’s collection and the extraordinary objects from A Very, Very Tiffany Holiday, he wonders around picking up various objets d’art, in particular a bejewelled “bird on a rock” broach to rival the Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger® Paris Flames clip in 18k yellow gold and platinum with diamonds pinned on his lapel before his curiosity takes us on board what looks like the dressiest albeit macho Tiffany Blue motorcycle I’ve ever seen.  Amongst the many wonders, Goldblum deigns to take a selfie but then who wouldn’t? It’s not everyday one gets to see an emblem of roaring machismo (An Indian Scout motorcycle) with famed Thunder Stroke 111 engine producing 119 ft-lbs of torque prettied up in Tiffany Blue. He then heads off for some Tiffany hot chocolate and a gander at the Trophy case before a flight of whimsy inspires him to show off his athletic street-cred, once hinted at with many a topless shot in his many movies, this time demonstrated with Tiffany Blue basketballs.

Goldblum then proceeds to shoot pool on what would like be a snooker table most likely found in the penthouse of Dr. Fraiser Crane or in chaos theorist Ian Malcolm’s bachelor pad (a character Goldblum played in Jurassic Park) than say, straight-laced Jurassic Park colleague and paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant’s town house.

The Tiffany Men’s Pop-Up Shop, located at 6 East 57th Street, showcases

What Goldblum wore from the Tiffany Men’s Collection and the things which caught his fancy…

On Jeff’s lapel – Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger® Paris Flames clip in 18k yellow gold and platinum with diamonds

Magnificent 18k yellow gold platinum and diamond brooch, by Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger. The name of this particular design was the “Paris Flame”, highlighting the unusual and fantastic brooch made in the likeness of a flaming 5 point star, with polish gold flame-like rays; its center is set in platinum and features over 1.5 carats of very high grade white diamonds.

On his wrist – Tiffany 1837 Makers 27 mm square watch in 18k gold with a black alligator strap

Featuring a white dial with gold numerals and powered by an ETA 2824 Self-winding mechanical movement with 38 hours power reserve.

On his other wrist – Diamond Point cuff in 18k gold, extra large

The geometric style of the Diamond Point collection lends a contemporary edge to classic designs. The unique cut technique of this cuff creates a textured look for a bold and modern feel.

On Jeff Goldblum’s fingers – Tiffany 1837® Makers black onyx signet ring in 18k gold and Diamond Point wide ring in 18k gold

Designed with black onyx, a unique variety of quartz found in nature, this modern design turns heads with a smooth finish and high polish. Crafted with a makers symbol inspired by the renowned Tiffany hollowware shop, the Tiffany 1837® Makers collection honors Tiffany’s legacy of expert craftsmanship through a modern lens. This bold ring works just as well styled with a casual tee as it does with a button-down shirt.

His Diamond Point ring follows in the same vein as his bracelet: Designed for the modern man and inspired by a culet—the bottom point of a diamond—this versatile ring is a piece for every day.

Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger Bird on a Rock Clip

This iconic Schlumberger design has been recognized as a whimsical symbol of glamour since its introduction in 1965. In 18k gold and platinum, this small version of the original piece boasts an emerald-cut tourmaline, round brilliant diamonds and a round pink sapphire. Tourmaline, carat weight 50.61; round brilliant diamonds, carat total weight 1.70; pink sapphire, carat weight .01.

Very Very Extraordinary Tiffany Indian Motorcycle

Available in the U.S. only, Tiffany in collaboration with Indian Motorcycle International, Wagner Motorsports and Barnstorm Cycles & Jeeps created an Indian Scout Model featuring custom-laced wheels with chrome-plated rims and spokes dressed in vintage tread tires, a custom high-polished stainless steel exhaust, Tiffany-designed engine covers, a custom Tiffany sterling silver plaque on the front fender and a custom Tiffany Blue® paint job.

The Pool Table

For your favorite player, a handcrafted Tiffany Blue® Blatt Billiards pool table fashioned from rift-sawn American oak with a professional-grade Tiffany Blue® felt bed. The design features a sterling silver plaque that can be custom engraved by Tiffany’s master hand engravers with a message of your choice. Four custom maple cue sticks, a white oak pool triangle with sterling silver details, a set of Tiffany Blue® pool balls and a sterling silver chalk holder with Tiffany Blue® chalk puts the holidays in the pocket.

Tiffany Paper Clip Playing Cards in a Leather Pouch

In the brand’s Home & Accessories collection, form meets function and quality to make ordinary objects extraordinary. Your whimsical Tiffany Paper Clip playing cards can also be stored in this luxurious pouch for a sophisticated feel ala Goldblum.

Body, Mind And Spirit: A retreat at Thann Wellness Destination, Bangkok

An hour and 20-minute drive north from Bangkok to the tree-shaded rural district of Bang Sai leads you to a luxurious resort and wellness retreat spanning across 10 acres of lush landscape, which boasts architectural design with discreet influences from ancient Ayutthaya elements.

Situated in Thailand’s old capital, Ayutthaya, Thann Wellness Destination offers a complete wellness experience and artistic lifestyle for a healthy body, mind and spirit.

The resort has 46 spacious guest accommodations ranging from suites to pool villas set in a tranquil location on the banks of the Noi River, amid the lush rice fields.

A nod to the rich history of the district, the rooms carry discreet Ayutthaya influences in the form of artworks, statutes and motifs emblazoned on the walls. In addition, Thann botanical-based skincare and aromatherapy products can be found in all the rooms while the complimentary minibar is stocked with healthy drinks such as fruit juices and fruit-infused water, in glass bottles to promote sustainability.

As its name suggests, promoting healthy lives and well-being is the main focus at Thann Wellness Destination. The 1,500 sqm spa complex has 15 treatment rooms with two double aroma rooms, nine single aroma rooms, two double Thao massage rooms and two single Thai massage rooms, aromatherapy baths, an aromatherapy steam room, three all-purpose studios and a fitness centre.

Here, the treatments are performed by certified professionals and therapists with extensive knowledge on anatomy, aromatherapy and massage techniques. The three different temperature (25 ̊C, 30 ̊C and 39 ̊C) aromatherapy baths help stimulate lymphatic, soothe tired muscles and improve blood circulations. The wellness activities at the centre range from yoga sessions to aromatherapy workshops and Muay Thai classes.

Dining at Thann Wellness Destination is lavish and sophisticated. Guests can choose from the three dining concepts: a river restaurant, a modern-oriental café and a casual street food eatery – with each of them offering a different, nutritious menu with carefully curated natural flavours.

Many of the ingredients are sourced from local community markets as well as the resort’s residue-free farm and garden – especially the fruits, vegetables, river prawn and fishes, and free-range eggs and chicken.

Besides the distinctive menus, the ambience of each concept is equally idiosyncratic. Enjoy a multi-course meal that is meticulously prepared to deliver the best Thai culinary experience in an opulent setting at the Riverfront Restaurant, or mind-blowing international dishes where an Asian antique collection of tableware and cooking utensil is displayed at the Tea Room.

Or walk through the Thai Street Foods – a food hall that offers a vast array of Thai street foods and snacks such as pounded papaya, grilled meat skewers with sticky rice and Thai noodles, just to name a few.

With a minimum of two-night stay, Thann Wellness Destination promises a peaceful, restful and rejuvenating experience for burnt-out travellers yearning to get away from the madding crowd. “Here at Thann Wellness Destination, we want to create the most Zen experience and stress-free lifestyle for our visitors.

Guests do not have to worry about what to wear, eat or activities to enjoy at the resort because everything is well-prepared for them by the team,” said Tony Suppattranont, founder of Thann Wellness Destination.

REVIEW: M Social Singapore, a stay turned adventure that you need to experience

As Malaysians, Singapore is a destination we frequent a lot – for its close proximity and countless lifestyle excitement – and for that, we constantly look for a unique hotel experience to enhance our trip there.

That’s when M Social hotel comes into play with its impeccable service and ambience that can turn a simple hotel stay into an adventure. Nestled in the buzzing neighbourhood of Robertson Quay, where a multitude of entertainment, dining hotspots and cultural experience find their home, there’s no reason not to pay this hotel a visit.

Team L’Officiel has the opportunity to pay a visit recently to indulge in all it has to offer and here’s why we think a stay in M Social can very well turn into an exciting adventure for you!

CHECKING IN

Upon arrival at M Social, the first thing that got us excited was the visual presentation of its lobby and reception area. Vibrating with chic modern vibes, each element within the space is planned with care and incorporated with various contemporary art pieces – from the tiles to its centrepiece and even wallpaper.

Like many modern contemporary hotels, check-in is made extremely convenient where you can expedite the process with its self-check-in counter that will scan your travel documents, track your room reservation and prepare your room keys instantaneously.

Of course, there will also be staff stationed at the lobby to assist you, should there be any questions, and to send your luggage straight to your room.

YOUR ROOM

When we talk about rooms available, M Social has plenty of variations prepared including the Alcove rooms, (a room designed with an alcove ceiling to mirror an attic-like experience) and the Loft rooms (a two-storey space that separates the sleep and lounge experience).

Even within the two options, you can further select whether you want a scenic view or a terrace setting, where you get a miniature personal garden to enjoy some peace and quiet.

For us, we opted for the Loft Gallery Room, where you have your bath, sleep and closet on the ground level and a cosy study area on the mezzanine level. Compact, yet spacious (thanks to the two-level setting), you get a spectacular floor-to-ceiling window for an elevated view of the surrounding neighbourhood. Rest assured, sleek blinds are installed for your privacy.

Another thing we appreciate of the loft setting is how clever M Social plans its interior where each nook and cranny is utilised to its potential without wasting space – a sentiment fit for the new generation of minimalist.

DISCOVERING M SOCIAL

After settling down and unpack, it is time to go on a mini excursion to discover the many facilities of the hotel. First stop, we have to highlight the outdoor swimming pool. Being further upstream of the Singapore River and on the edge of Downtown Singapore, M Social provides the perfect escape for you to enjoy a quiet and relaxing day by the pool.

Even if you are not up for sunbathing or a swim, you can lounge with a book and cocktail in hand for a sweet R&R.

After the quick session at the pool, maybe it is time to grab a bite and their resident eatery Beast & Butterflies is a favourable option where they serve an array of Modern Asian Cuisine that combines Eastern and Western flavours. Chic, well-decorated and stocking up a delectable menu, Beast & Butterflies is also a hotspot where locals gather for a quick Happy Hour and dinner.

Beast & Butterflies aside, you have plenty of dining options for every meal of the day, thanks to M Social’s location. Along the stretch at Robertson Quay, you can find an array of bars, bistros, cafés and restaurants to choose from including the popular PS Cafe, Common Man Coffee Roasters and Super Loco.

Or if you are looking to head out to the city, many tourist spots are within 10 – 20 minutes of walking distance including Chinatown, Clarke Quay and National Gallery Singapore. There is also a free shuttle bus provided to chauffeur you to Harbourfront and Buona Vista areas.

AN AUTOMATED SERVICE TO YOUR DOORSTEP

After a long day out and it is time to head back to your room to unwind and if you are are in need of simple amenities from a bottle of water, a can of coke or an extra towel, you can utilise the AURA robot, an automated room service robot that can deliver itself right to your doorstep.

M Social is actually one of the world’s first hotel to deploy this kind of room service and while it sounds simple, to see it in action during your stay can be a rather fascinating and novel experience!

Charter in Norway: A Stunning Cruise Powered by Nature

Norway’s sheltered fjords are ideal for calm charter cruises, yet also offer stunning hiking, climbing, fishing, diving, paragliding and helicopter rides.

When I was invited to spend a few days exploring Norway on board the 43m charter superyacht Daydream, my confirmation was almost instant. Located on similar latitudes to Iceland, much of it even further north, Norway has a reputation for spectacular scenery and adventure.

Norway is an emerging cruising and charter destination, so most superyachts will have the seas, rivers and spectacular scenery to themselves; Photo: Matt Porteous

During the flight, I read up and discover some impressive facts. The Human Development Index, published regularly by the United Nations, classifies Norway as the world’s most developed country. According to the Democracy Index of British magazine The Economist, the Scandinavian state is the most democratic and its GPD per capita ranks third globally.

Norway only has a population of 5.3 million, but is one of Europe’s largest countries in terms of area and has an enormous coastline due to its enormous number of islands. It’s frequently listed third among countries with the most islands, behind Scandinavian neighbours Sweden and Finland.

As such, it’s an ideal place to explore by yacht, even if charter activity in this area is still in its infancy. There are just a handful of megayachts here each summer, as well as newly built yachts from German and Dutch shipyards whose maiden voyages often take place in Norway.

As our plane descends over the breathtaking Norwegian landscape, rugged rock faces tower above gently rolling hills, fringed by crisp green meadows. The glassy swathes of deep blue fjord water are dotted with an occasional boat, while on the horizon, snow-topped mountains complete the picturesque backdrop.

Norway’s spectacular fjords are great for cruising and hiking; Photo: Matt Porteous

Such remarkable geography helps explain why this country has produced renowned explorers such as Roald Amundsen, the first person to reach both the South Pole and North Pole, and Thor Heyerdahl, famous for his Kon-Tiki voyage of 1947 in which he sailed more than 8,000km across the Pacific in a wooden raft.

As we finally land, it’s a surprisingly pleasant 18 degrees Celsius, warmer than anticipated, and the real adventure begins.

Adventure Playground

Arriving on board the Christensen-built Daydream, myself and my fellow guests receive a warm welcome from Captain Damion and his seven-strong professional crew. Handed warm, scented towels to refresh us after our travels, we then enjoy champagne and canapés before being shown to our staterooms.

I then join the other guests in the beautiful, open-plan saloon to receive a briefing from the Captain on the itinerary for the next few days. We are advised that not only will this include paragliding, diving and fishing but there will also be an exhilarating helicopter flight over the fjord-strewn landscape and visits to Preikestolen – one of the country’s highest vantage points – and the exquisite gardens on the private island of Flor and Fjære.

Preikestolen is a steep cliff that rises 604m and offers remarkable views from its flat top: Photo: Matt Porteous

Departing from Stavanger, one of the biggest cities in this sparsely populated country, we begin our thrilling exploration of the serene fjords in the Rogaland municipality.

Norway is a paradise for fishing enthusiasts. Daydream pulls up behind a well-equipped Jeanneau Merry Fisher tender, enabling guests to get a little closer to the coast or angle in shallow waters. Differing from many other European areas, Norway’s calm coastal waters are extremely rich in fish, so it’s almost impossible not to catch something.

We learn that experienced anglers often hook large halibut, impressive Atlantic salmon or the tasty but rather unattractive wolfish, as well as coalfish, haddock and cod. Parts of the fjords are sometimes over 1,000m deep and this is where unusual species such as the ice shark can be found.

The peaceful fjords provide the perfect conditions for watersports and we enjoy some exhilarating jetski rides before kayaking up close to waterfalls.

Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, hanging off Preikestolen

Following a quiet cruise along the exceptional Lysefjord, we find a helicopter waiting for us. Swooping over the landscape, our fascinating bird’s-eye view encompasses majestic peaks, tranquil bands of water, and flat, rocky platforms strewn with massive boulders.

The sight of Preikestolen is phenomenal. Also known as Pulpit Rock, it famously features in the recent Tom Cruise hit, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, as Ethan Hunt hangs by his fingers on the edge of the cliff, fighting for survival, while below him is a sheer 604m drop into the watery depths. If this is free climbing, I might just leave this to the experts and special agents.

On Board Attractions

Far below, Captain Damion provides the perfect photo opportunity by driving Daydream in loops. This is also the sign for our pilot that he should bring us back on board and although it’s getting late, one could almost think it is early afternoon. After all, Norway benefits from almost constant daylight in the summer months.

Norway is an action-lover’s paradise, with the calm waters perfect for everything from jetskiing to diving and kayaking; Photo: Tom Van Oossanen

Fortunately, we’re not too late for the sensational dinner awaiting us on the sun deck. Chef David is a master of creating fusion foods and wows us with a combination of king crab risotto, duck breast, smoked salmon and of course Norwegian wild fish.

A nightcap in the jacuzzi concludes this and every evening of our trip as it provides the perfect spot to catch up on the day’s adventures with fellow guests – from the exhilaration of jet-skiing, to the adrenalin-buzz of paragliding and the majestic views from the helicopter.

One of the many benefits of a yacht charter in Norway is the opportunity to enjoy a digital detox, as there are some areas of the fjords where the high cliffs mean your mobile phone signal is limited. However, communication with the outside world is always possible via the yacht’s satellite system, should it be required.

A glass of champagne in the jacuzzi is an ideal way to unwind at the end of the day, especially in Norway’s summer when it remains light most of the time

As we depart and I soak up the last views of this incredible landscape, I was actually heartened to realise that chartering in Norway is still in its infancy. For those looking for a new travel experience, offering more seclusion, outdoor adventure and rare opportunities in a remote landscape, Norway holds a powerful appeal.

Siffert won a number of endurance races, including leading Porsche to victory in the 1969 in the World Sportscar Championships.

“We are truly honored to begin our partnership with Porsche, a move which further strengthens our presence in Formula E. Beyond sharing the same passion for motorsport and having the same challenger spirit, our two brands have the same uncompromising love for quality and technology.” – Stéphane Bianchi, TAG Heuer CEO

TAG Heuer and Porsche enter Partnership for Formula E with La Chaux-de-Fonds brand becoming Title and Timing Partner

By the 1980s, “TAG-Turbo made by Porsche” powered Formula 1 cars won two Constructors’ Championships (1984 & 1985) and three Drivers’ Championships (1984-1986). The 90s saw TAG Heuer becoming a sponsor of the Porsche Supercup and today, both brands will cross new frontiers with their partnership in Formula E, the world’s first electric street racing series currently into its sixth season.

“We are delighted to welcome TAG Heuer again at Porsche Motorsport. Looking back on our successful history, both brands will build on former achievements for this new era in Formula E.” – Fritz Enzinger, Vice President Porsche Motorsport

In terms of popular culture, the Swiss watchmaker’s association with the car maker was catapulted globally when Michael Delaney (Steve McQueen), a Porsche driver, wore the iconic Heuer Monaco in the movie, Le Mans. In the real world, TAG Heuer has been synonymous with motorsport since the earliest part of the 20th century, with leading partnerships extending across all areas of the sport. The brand is also one of the founding partners of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship,

Just today, a Porsche Taycan prototype, driven by Lars Kern, set fastest 4-door electric car record at Nürburgring Nordschleife. The Taycan, which will officially debut September 4, completed the 12.8-mile course in 7 minutes and 42 seconds.

Earlier in July, the Porsche Taycan appearaed as part of the grand finale of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship in New York, where it showed off its capabilities by completing several fast laps on the race circuit, prompting Porsche works driver Neel Jani to opine, “Like our Formula E car, it has a Porsche drivetrain that is designed for performance and reliability. No matter whether it is a racing car or a series-production model, it is extremely important to drive many miles in the test phase and to gain experience with the vehicle.”

The Taycan prototype has made three appearances on three continents (China, Great Britain and the US ). Heuer also recently launched the third of their limited edition Monaco racing chronographs.

One of Four Surviving 1953 Alfa Romeo Race Cars Up For Sale

The 1950s and 1960s were very good years for Italian automobile manufacturing, and this 1953 Alfa Romeo 6C 3000 CM Superflow IV is a prime example of a coachbuilder from that golden era.

One of Four Surviving 1953 Alfa Romeo Race Cars Now Up For Sale

Described as “one of the most important post-war Alfa Romeos” ever made, this 3000 CM enjoyed a short racing life (it is believed to have been part of Alfa Romeo’s 1953 Le Mans effort), before it was shipped off to Pininfarina at the end of 1953 to be refurbished.

The car, legend has it, is said to have been borne out of Alfa Romeo’s desire to build a world-class sports racing car, based on the 6C 3000 engine.

The result was this 6C 3000 CM – the CM suffix standing for Competizione Maggiorata or Competition Enlarged Displacement. Built to contest endurance races such as the Mille Miglia and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 6C 3000 CM was Alfa Romeo’s answer to Italian rivals Lancia and Ferrari and, in many ways, it was the most advanced sports car of the early 1950s.

A coat of red body paint, a complete replacement of its original coupe panels, and many part changes and additions later – including a new glass canopy and sliding roof panels, and the removal of a front-end grill and rear fins; the Superflow IV was finally born, and would stay in that state for almost four decades.

Between 1956 and 1960, the Superflow was displayed at the Paris, Torino, and Geneva motor shows. The car then went through a series of owners from the 1960s until it was acquired in 2006 by its current owner, an avid American collector of Italian coachbuilders.

Now the red racer is being put up for sale through auction house Gooding & Company, and it could be yours for anywhere between US$6 million to US$8 million, according to pre-sale estimates. Bids will start at US$5.5 million.

Built in extremely limited numbers, the 6C 3000 CM is one of the most rare and sought-after postwar Alfa Romeo models. Not only are these supposedly the last great front-engine, large-displacement competition cars built by the celebrated Milanese firm, they are also among the most exotic, possessing groundbreaking engineering and extraordinary performance. Today, just four examples are known to survive, all of which are kept in the Alfa Romeo factory museum or in significant private collections.

Adventure Tourism – Cheetah Plains Game Lodge in Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Cheetah Plains Game Lodge is emblematic of a growing trend of adventure tourism that high net worth individuals are choosing over perfunctory luxury travel

Flanking the south western section of the Kruger National Park, Sabi Sands Game Reserve is a 65,000 hectare reserve, pioneered by local landowners in the 1950s and today, a legacy continued by the third and fourth generations of those families. Located within it, the Cheetah Plains Game Lodge.

Adventure Tourism: Cheetah Plains Game Lodge in Sabi Sands Game Reserve

For those familiar with the exclusive safari adventure, Cheetah Plains Game Lodge has come a long way since its launch. The South African Game Lodge has “upgraded” from the traditional safari tent camp, opting instead for a trio of Afro-minimalist sanctuaries, while still remaining a beacon of eco-luxe safari experiences steeped in collaborative expression of the region’s rich heritage.

Cheetah Plains is a pioneer in this genre of adventure tourism and while definitively upscale, the eco-safari in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve takes nothing away from an authentic African big game experience thanks to their expert team of safari trackers, guiding your personal discovery of this significant conservancy.

Entirely ‘off the grid’ courtesy of Owner Japie van Niekerk’s singular approach to sustainability, Cheetah Plains Game Lodge partnered with some of the world’s best minds in the field of renewable energy to provide clean energy solutions, making the South African Game Lodge one of the most eco-friendly, self-sustaining Safari resorts anywhere on the planet. Use of grey-water recycling systems ensures that the Sabi Sands Game eco-resort has optimal  water consumption, an important feature given the growing water crisis in South Africa (over 5 million people with no access to clean water), and climate change exacerbating the issue.

Imaginative, Afro-themed honest architecture is complemented by restful interiors that invite the outside in. These luxurious, private Plains Houses are comprised of two parts: the shared space and the accommodation. The central building includes an expansive formal lounge, living room, sun deck, lap pool, loggia, fine wine gallery and dining room. While the accommodation area comprises four graciously appointed free-standing Private Suites; all enjoying a muted palette of the interior design imbued with warm, natural elements is enhanced with handpicked decor pieces by notable African artisans.

Peter Lindbergh’s legacy in photographs and photography

The photographer’s hyper-realistic portrayals of the world’s beauties “took the gloss off” specimens of human perfection, making them approachable and less commercial

Peter Lindbergh on set with Charlize Theron for Breitling #SquadsOnAMission

“A fashion photographer should contribute to defining the image of the contemporary woman or man in their time, to reflect a certain social or human reality. How surrealistic is today’s commercial agenda to retouch all signs of life and of experience, to retouch the very personal truth of the face itself?” – Peter Lindberg,  May 2016 issue of Art Forum.

Peter Lindbergh may died this week aged 74, but he has left us a legacy of his vision, a world untouched by make up and photoshop, and a plethora of raw, stark and iconic black and white images which shaped photography culture for at least a decade.

One of Lindbergh’s iconic shot with the world’s first supermodels

Peter Lindbergh’s legacy in photographs and photography

His signature style and aesthetic crossed genres, spanning industries – but most famously, he was herald of the Age of the supermodel, catapulting runway stars Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, Christy Turlington, and Cindy Crawford into global superstardom when he featured them on his January 1990 cover of British Vogue.

“Refusing to bow to glossy perfection is Peter Lindbergh’s trademark – the essence of the images that look into each person’s unvarnished soul, however familiar or famous the sitter” – Suzy Menkes

Indeed, his hyper-realistic portrayals of the world’s beauties “took the gloss off” as Suzy Menkes would assert, specimens of human perfection, making them appear “as they are”. In essence, diminishing the commercial perception of high gloss fashion photography that turned their subjects into advertisements.

Lindbergh’s un-retouched portraitures were so influential that he became the first photographer in the history of the Pirelli Calendar to be invited to shoot for the third time. He had previously shot for Pirelli in 1996 and 2002.

Born Peter Brodbeck in Leszno, Poland, the graduate of Berlin Academy of Fine Arts was originally a painter in 1960s but later he discovered his joy of taking pictures of his nephews and nieces. By 1973, Lindbergh opened his first studio in Düsseldorf and then a four decade career as the world’s premier celebrity photographer.

Ironically, unlike most fashion shoots of the day which were taking place in studios, Lindbergh would be a pioneer of high-fashion backdrops in the real world in back alleyways, street corners and fire escapes, often with standing lights purposely in shot rather than carefully hidden away.

“Fashion is a notoriously cheap and treacherous financial backwater of unpaid bills and screwed assistants. Peter would always come through even for his thirds. As an assistant in those days…that was a kindness you did not often experience as you tried to work with the very best.” – A former collaborator of Lindbergh’s commenting on Peter’s personal legacy

His work has been shown in renown museums such as London’s Victoria & Albert Museum and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, but ultimately, its not only a professional legacy but a personal one that Lindbergh has left behind. Opining on NYT, B.T. commented on his perspectives having worked with Lindbergh, “He was one of the kindest people I’ve ever met, and by far the kindest person in imaging or advertising or fashion-whatever you want to call it. He was well paid-sure. Anyone actually THAT good at what they do deserves to be. These women were pretty but Peter made them magic. They would not have been magic without him. Their age did not matter. And unlike basically every other photographer for the last forty years, all Peter needed to do this was the sun and a wall. Nobody else evoked such a distinct look-and in a medium (B/W) which most everyone else felt had become passé with the 60’s. He built brands single handedly with nothing but a camera. Peter paid his crew himself when clients were too cheap, or when celebrities canceled at the last minute, or advertising clients stiffed on a prelight day. Fashion is a notoriously cheap and treacherous financial backwater of unpaid bills and screwed assistants. Peter would always come through even for his thirds. As an assistant in those days…that was a kindness you did not often experience as you tried to work with the very best. Most of the best were not generous. But Peter-he was generosity personified. He was the definition of a gentleman and the kindly professor you wanted to go drink with, all rolled into one. And he was really fun to drink with.”

Lalique Creates World’s First Translucent Wine Barrel

Last June, French glassmaker Lalique, known for its beautiful array of glass and crystal ware, relaunched the famed Sauternes winery Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey, which it acquired in 2014, as an upscale bed and breakfast.

The Premier Grand Cru Classé vineyard and now hotel turns 400 years old this year, and in celebration of that milestone, Lalique has created a special commemoration barrel made entirely from its top-of-the-line crystal.

A front view of the “world’s first fully translucent wine barrel”, created by French glassmaker Lalique. Here, you can see the frosted panel monogram engraved with engraved with the words “Femme et Raisins (Woman and Grapes)”

Lalique Creates World’s First Translucent Wine Barrel

“This extraordinary piece, crafted at the Lalique factory, showcases the outstanding skills and know-how of our master glassmakers and the standards of excellence for which we strive.” – Silvio Denz, Chairman and CEO of Lalique

The crystal barrel, two years in the making, was created in celebration of the Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey’s 400th anniversary

Completely see-through, the Bordeaux-style barrel, known locally as a barrique, has the distinction of being the world’s first completely translucent barrel.

Two years in the making, it has been filled with 225 litres of the Château Lafaurie-Premier Grand Cru Classé 2013 Premier Grand Cru Classé, the first vintage to be produced under the new owners.

The barrique was constructed using a traditional single-casting technique invented by founder René Lalique known as “lost-wax casting”

The crystal barrique, which is currently presented at the main lobby of the Lalique Hotel & Restaurant Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey, is truly a display of Lalique’s technical prowess, for it uses a traditional single-casting technique that hasn’t been employed since 1930 known as “lost-wax casting”.

Other noteworthy features include: a monogram engraved with the words “Femme et Raisins (Woman and Grapes)” – first created by René Lalique in 1928 for the first-class sleeping cars on the Côte d’Azur Pullman Express – at the frosted front end; leather straps fastened with crystal cabochons to bind the barrel; as well as a crystal stopper right up top.

Said Silvio Denz, Chairman and CEO of Lalique: “This extraordinary piece, crafted at the Lalique factory, showcases the outstanding skills and know-how of our master glassmakers and the standards of excellence for which we strive. The alliance between Lalique and Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey is a marriage of French savoir-faire and savoir-vivre, a fusion between the gold of Sauternes and the crystal of Alsace.”

Henry Jacques: For the love of scent

Having recently welcomed Henry Jacques into its fold, the award-winning Pavilion Kuala Lumpur’s cachet of upscale brands just got hoisted up a few notches. As its second stand-alone boutique in Asia, the French high perfumer’s latest retail address is truly a nod to the capital’s rising status as a global shopping destination.

Designed by artistic director Christophe Tollemer, the 650-sq ft boutique was virtually transported from France — where it was conceived and assembled before being vacuum-packed and reassembled in Kuala Lumpur by the Henry Jacques team.

This is to ensure the authenticity of its craftsmanship as a French establishment — a vital requirement to reflect the rare and exceptional ingredients used in the perfumes.

INSIDE HENRY JACQUES PAVILION KL

For a space that houses the most splendid and sumptuous of essences, the boutique is unequivocally warm and inviting — thanks to the light brown-coloured old solid oak used to construct its perfectly jointed main structure. The attention to detail of the custom-tailored premises is evident from the hand-sculpted basswood moulding with guildings finish, and also the Régence gold leaf-covered ceilingswhose patina was worked on by French master painter Louis-Daniel Jouve.

Striking a balance between the exterior and interior, the store’s front facade features two generously sized windows that tease passers-by with an in-store sneak peek, while folding doors are strategically placed within to enclose the VIP room for confidentiality. Elegance is the unspoken theme of the inner areas, exquisitely furnished with the soft, deluxe fabrics of Holland & Sherry.

PIÈCE DE RÉSISTANCE

At the centre stage of the space is the perfume organ, surrounded by fennel-clad walls and hemp flooring. As if waiting on cue to be discovered, the perfume collections are purposefully tucked away from sight, placed in the confines of an intimate alcove. Here, clients can explore leisurely and freely, again in complete privacy.

Another area offering utmost seclusion is the inner VIP area where an antique dressing table stands — built in the aesthetic of Louis XVIth and made from rosewood marquetry. Here, the sought-after creations of the High Jewelry collection, housed in perfume flacons embellished with precious stones and materials, populate the space.

A sophisticated marriage between the grandeur of historic Parisian abodes and contemporary design, the Henry Jacques boutique is enlivened with personal creations and treasured antiques. The Tollemer–designed space is a scene-setter for close encounters of the olfactory kind, be it a search for a sparkling bespoke fragrance or an equally cherished scent from among the French perfumer’s existing collections.

The Henry Jacques haute parfumerie boutique is located at Level 2 Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.

Tiffany & Co. launches New Men’s Collection with accessories, homewares and games

The iconic go-to jewellery brand of choice when it comes to anniversaries and birthdays wants men to buy Tiffany & Co.’s products for themselves

Tiffany x Globe-trotter’s collection

To modern gentlemen, Tiffany & Co. has been a go-to staple for anniversary gifts, last minute presents and a treasure trove of birthday curios for loved ones of the opposite gender. Today, the iconic jeweller wants men to get something for themselves with the launch of the brand’s new men’s collection of men’s jewellery, accessories, barware, home objects, games and more.

“Tiffany Men’s is centered on craftsmanship as the foundation of our company. Tiffany 1837 Makers is a nod to the workmanship and time-honored techniques used in creating jewelry—the idea that there’s a person behind each object,” said Reed Krakoff, chief artistic officer, Tiffany & Co.

According to Euromonitor International, the women’s jewellery market generated US$33.2 billion but men’s jewellery segment has been growing, achieving US$5.8 billion in 2018.

Tiffany & Co. launches New Men’s Collection with accessories, homewares and games

Founded in 1837, the brand’s modern history and iconic blue boxes have an indelible association for femininity (thanks to Audrey Hepburn’s (and the movie’s) near universal appeal and popularity) and elegantly refined female-marketed jewellery.

That said, Tiffany & Co. has the provenance of being a respected crafter of masculine metalware as well – in 1862, Tiffany supplied the Union Army with Model 1840 Cavalry Sabers, an elegant if deadly implement of war inspired by the 1822 French hussar’s sabre. In 1877, the atelier also made Medals of Honour, at first for the New York Police Department and later, for the the United States Department of the Navy which became known as the “Tiffany Cross” version. Given the company’s historical production of martial goods, it is not entirely out of left field to debut a comprehensive Tiffany & Co. men’s collection.

According to Washington Post, some critics feel that the glitz and glamour of Tiffany & Co. have long departed from the brand’s more masculine creations, however, it is our contention that under Reed Krakoff’s deft artistic touch, the maker of the Tiffany 1837 Makers and Diamond Point collections, venturing into men’s accessories and jewellery is emblematic of its heritage of as a precious metal artisan with a rich silversmithing legacy.

Available in stores from October, the Tiffany & Co. men’s collection will include close to 100 designs encompassing the gamut of accessories, barware, home objects, and games, with prices going up to US$15,000. Uncomplicated and rooted in expert craftsmanship, Tiffany Men’s embodies the spirit of the modern man: bold and confident, casual yet refined.

Made to order, the Tiffany 1837 Makers collection is inspired by the jeweller’s hollowware workshop and its 160 year tradition of handcrafting sports trophies. Designers experimented with concave and convex forms, flat edges and motifs evocative of utilitarian hardware when creating jewelry, barware and more. Stamped with symbols like “T & CO MAKERS,” “NY” and “AG925,” Tiffany 1837 Makers honours Tiffany’s silversmithing heritage while referencing the fact that the luxury house set the U.S. standard for sterling silver (925 per 1,000 parts silver).

Where Tiffany 1837 Makers is artisanal and utilitarian, Diamond Point represents the elevated, classic end of the style spectrum with a strong, graphic pattern. Die struck and hand polished to achieve its iconic textures, the motif appears as a subtle accent or a prominent overlay on jewelry and Home & Accessories pieces like the Diamond Point rectangle pendant in sterling silver, cuff in sterling silver and cocktail mixer in lead crystal and sterling silver.

New Sensation: Gucci unveils new watch collections at Baselworld 2019

If you are in favour of the Alessandro Michele-led fashion renaissance at Gucci, then it is very likely that the current trove of Gucci watches would hit the sweet spot for you.

Founded in Florence in 1921, the Italian luxury fashion label began designing, developing and manufacturing watches in the early ’70s to create the world’s first “fashion” watches. Gucci watches have always been Swiss-made, holding sway for their innovative design, quality and craftsmanship.

Above all, they are sought after for a unique and creative mix of traditional elegance and contemporary spirit, wrapped irresistibly around iconic House emblems.

At Baselworld 2019, Gucci Timepieces and Jewelry made a splash with not one but two stands in the main hall dedicated to its myriad of novelties. One of the stands, a glass-encased conservatory replete with eclectic furnishings and a mini garden, housed a multitude of displays featuring the star timepiece called “Grip”. Inspired by the skateboarding culture, the timepiece’s snug fit around the wrist references how trainers stick to a skateboard’s grip tape.

Unisex and androgynous, the Michele-designed watch follows from the gender-fluid universe of the creative director’s reimaginings of Gucci. Its sui generis, quirky design and clean lines—a rounded square case displaying a trio of windows with white rotating disks to indicate the hour, minute and date in a top-to-bottom sequence—gives it a strong vintage appeal.

GUCCI GRIP

The quartz-powered Gucci Grip has four variants in 35 mm and 38 mm: yellow gold PVD case and bracelet; steel case and bracelet; yellow gold PVD case with bordeaux calf leather strap; and steel case with green calf leather bracelet. While the full-metal ones are engraved with Gucci’s signature interlocking G logos on the case and bracelet, the leather versions feature a simple “GUCCI” engraving on the dial’s bottom right-hand corner.

Offered with a sheer variety of sophisticated strap options in leather type and colour, the Grip is infinitely versatile, straddling the realm of a fashion accessory and timepiece with its audacious and unexpected details.

GUCCI G-TIMELESS AUTOMATIC

Giving this year’s G-Timeless a new spin are eight striking new editions, making an entrance with stone dials embellished with bees—a House signature—as hour markers and a decorative motif. For a luxurious take, the three 38-mm variations come with an 18k yellow gold case, alongside black onyx, brown tiger eye and green malachite stone dials partnered with black alligator, brown lizard, and precious skin with printed pattern straps respectively.

The next two 38-mm G-Timeless models are mixed-metal versions with steel cases and lapiz stone dials, finished with a steel-and-gold buckle and a blue lizard strap for one, while the other is adorned with an 18k yellow gold and steel bracelet.

Simple and classic, the G-Timeless with a steel case and bracelet, and a black onyx stone dial are available in 38-mm and 42-mm cases. Last is a 42-mm steel case rendition paired with a black onyx stone dial and shanghai calf leather strap with a steel buckle. Showcasing their Sellita automatic movement, all eight watches feature transparent case backs with anti-reflective sapphire crystal, while their adjustable buckles are tamped with the interlocking G motif.

GUCCI G-TIMELESS CONTEMPORARY

The more flamboyant G-Timeless Contemporary line with its proliferation of Gucci-isms gives us two quartz models, displaying seamlessness from dial to strap, on top of a revolutionary printed mesh technique. The first is a 38-mm all-steel creation: case, mesh-pattern dial and mesh bracelet, imprinted with a Gucci Kingsnake visual, sleekly slithering from dial to bracelet.

The other 42-mm edition is a shout-out to the brand’s enduring green-red-green graphic Web pattern running in linear fashion from dial to bracelet.

As Gucci Timepieces and Jewelry president and CEO Piero Braga says, “Gucci creates fashion watches that are different from anything else you will see in the industry. Our timepieces bring together a unique combination of Italian creativity, Swiss watchmaking and Gucci DNA. They are bold and distinctive, and designed to encourage self-expression.”

Not only are gender codes and other social mores being blurred, but the fashion and horology worlds at Gucci are also now walking in unison more than ever before.

Bling Ring: Gucci Fine Jewellery at Baselworld 2019

At the time of writing, Gucci’s high jewellery boutique has just debuted at Place Vendôme, Paris, in the midst of Couture Week. A few months back at Baselworld, the wide array of Gucci fine jewellery on showcase was, on hindsight, a timely precursor of the luxury fashion brand’s foray into haute joaillarie territory.

Not just revealing the authenticity of being aligned to maestro Alessandro Michele’s refreshed brand vision and narrative, Gucci’s exploits in the world of jewellery also attest to innovation and creativity now running free-flow in the House.

Extending its GG Running fine jewellery collection, Gucci riffs on a set of rings and hoop earrings, to good effect. The pieces elicit romance and eclecticism, woven together with the GG detail that harks back to an archival design from the 1970’s, a defining era of the House.

Starting from a foundation of 18k white and yellow gold and diamonds, both the ultrafine, delicate earrings and ring offer partial and full-diamond options.

Where the yellow gold hoop earrings, available in two different sizes, come embellished with a diamond-encrusted GG, the white gold variation is wholly diamond-studded for more glimmer. Unconventional yet totally fetching, the uber-slim GG Running rings highlight the Gucci’s flair for details. The graceful criss-cross silhouette with three variations of diamond accents gives off a dainty, geometric look, which easily complements other jewellery when worn together.

Gucci’s signature floral pattern offers the Gucci Flora fine jewellery collection a perpetual reference in a nod to the power and beauty of nature. The selection of bracelets, necklaces, rings and earrings in 18k white gold are embellished not just with diamonds, but feminine flowers, bows and pearls, with the GG motif as an unmistakable Gucci stamp.

In the collection are two delicate chain necklaces and bracelets with a floral-shaped diamond centerpiece and a GG-motif at the clasp. The chains of one of the necklaces and bracelets are decorated with pearl beads for a slightly more ostentatious vibe.

There are two ring iterations for Gucci Flora: a between-thefinger design featuring the GG detail and a floral motif; and a diamond-studded flower ring, perfect to wear together or individually. Echoing the asymmetry trend in earrings, Gucci Flora’s interpretations artistically combine diamond-encrusted flowers with the GG detail, juxtaposed with pearls as lovely punctuations.
