Chanel Embraces Their Couture Roots In An Inventively Unique Watch Collection For 2024

When it comes to Chanel’s watchmaking, they have always tried to differentiate this division from the fashion side of things. In fact, this is a common trend among fashion houses, where they feel the need to distance themselves from the fashion element to establish themselves as serious players in the watchmaking industry. Therefore, you can imagine that it came as quite a surprise when for 2024 Chanel, instead of hiding away their couture heritage decided to use it as inspiration for an entire capsule collection, and exhibit them in the heart of the biggest watchmaking fair, Watches & Wonders Geneva earlier this year. For the fair, Chanel struts down the catwalk with timepieces inspired by elements of fashion design including buttons, pin cushions, couture dummies, thimbles, scissors and much more, in a collection of watches they are naming Couture o’clock.

This is not to say that they have neglected the watchmaking side of things because even though the collection is fun in nature, the mechanisms behind them are still incredibly serious. For example, the hero watch for the year is a J12 timepiece which recreates a scene inspired by Gabrielle Chanel and her couture atelier at rue Cambon. To achieve their intended effect, the Chanel Watchmaking Creation Studio worked with movement makers Kenissi to create the first ever automaton movement, the Calibre 6, to animate the figurine of Mademoiselle Chanel, her scissors and her couture dummy.

In terms of complication, Chanel also made a one-of-a-kind mechanical sculpture that is at once a music box, automaton and clock to evoke the interior of Gabrielle Chanel’s apartment. When activated the couture busts come to life serenaded by the rhythms of “My Woman” by Al Bowlly, a melody that Mademoiselle liked to hum.

Yet another milestone reached this year is the introduction of a movement by the Kenissi manufacture within their ultra-feminine 33mm collection. With the J12 33mm getting its own self-winding movement, the Calibre 12.2, the timepiece becomes so much more than just a fashion accessory. The movement had to be carefully redesigned to fit a smaller case and thankfully all of it is visible through the transparent caseback. The Calibre 12.2 is also equipped with an oscillating weight in the form of a perfect circle. And to show you just how serious Chanel is about their watchmaking, the 33mm J12 is even officially Chronometer certified by the COSC.

In addition to this, Chanel is also bringing a touch of pink to their collection for 2024. The J12 and J12 X-Ray get this accent through the liberal use of baguette-cut pink sapphires strewn across the bezel and on the indices. As for the Boy-Friend Skeleton collection, the skeletonised bridges and plates have been given a pink coating.

Autumn Encased In a Fragrance: Chanel’s Sycomore Eau De Parfum

Image: Chanel

Chanel perfume is not only one of the most popular French perfume brands, but in fact one of the most popular in the world. Founded by Coco Chanel in 1910, the house has produced multiple legendary fragrances, from their world-renowned Chanel No. 5 to their botanic-inspired Gabrielle perfume. Amongst these celebrated scents, comes another equally notable release: Sycomore by Chanel.

Chanel’s Sycomore was first introduced to the world in 1930 by the brand’s renowned original perfumer, Ernst Beaux. Crafted with the help of Coco Chanel herself, it’s become an iconic scent that still plays an important role in the maison today. The original 1930 scent was all violet and tobacco with some support from soft aldehydes and balsamic wood. Smoky and earthy, it had a hint of cypress and created an incredibly elegant scent that is both richly masculine and sophisticated. In 2008, it was re-envisioned and re-introduced as part of Chanel’s prestige collection titled “Les Exclusifs”. It was created by Chanel’s in-house perfumer, Jacques Polge, along with an equally renowned “nose” in the industry, Christoper Sheldrake. It was described by Chanel as a scent filled with vetiver, notes of sandalwood, dashes of cypress and juniper.

Image: Chanel

Now, in collaboration with Maisons d’art, Chanel has employed in-house perfume creator, Olivier Polge, to revitalise the scent into a more intensified version of Sycomore. It leaves a powerful and enveloping trail, amplifying its sensuousness. Paired with notes of iris and subtly enhanced by accents of leather and vanilla, it pays homage to the original 1930s scent.

Image: Chanel

The highly precious nature of this new interpretation is showcased in an ultra-limited edition case, crafted as a series of 20 numbered pieces. The perfume is presented in a Baccarat crystal bottle, sealed with a fine baudruche and stamped with the Chanel double C to preserve its precious scent. It’s paired with a luxurious coffret embroidered by the Maison Lesage artisans. The finest raw materials found in the coffret are represented through embroidery in a rich autumnal scene depicting the olfactory atmosphere of Sycomore. It acts as a canvas for amethyst bicone beads and passementerie pearls, combined with pink peppercorns, dried juniper berries and thin wood shavings. When intertwined with the fold threads, it recalls the amber hue of the fragrance and the sycamore forest floor, creating an experience that both delights the nose and the eyes.

Image: Chanel

Each numbered piece of the Sycomore Eau de Parfum is a true collector’s item, acting as an item that celebrates both the excellence of Chanel’s perfumer and the unique craftsmanship of embroiderer Lesage. The bottle is available starting from September 2022.

Star in Motion: Chanel J12 Diamond Tourbillon Calibre 5

The onlooker’s gaze is at the heart of every tourbillon timepiece. French for “whirlwind”, because it literally spins on itself, the twirling mechanism provides a true spectacle that is at once sensorial, aesthetic and always gratifying. But there are those whose eyes are bigger than their appetites. For these visual hedonists, Chanel ups the showiness and prestige by crowning the complication with a diamond.

Designed in Paris by Arnaud Chastaingt, Director of Chanel’s Watchmaking Creation Studio, and developed and assembled by the Chanel Manufacture at La Chaux-de-Fonds, the J12 Diamond Tourbillon Calibre 5 is a technical and creative tour de force that culminates 35 years of fine watchmaking by the Parisian couturier. The watch features Chanel’s fifth in-house movement, which is also the first to incorporate a flying tourbillon.

Staged against the black circular bridge architecture that is characteristic of Chanel’s haute horlogerie movements, the tourbillon comes alive with the scintillating sparkle of diamonds. The “flying” setup removes the upper bridge of the tourbillon cage for an unobstructed view, allowing a sensational solitaire diamond to take centrestage. As the tourbillon moves through its hypnotic pace, the facets on the revolving gemstone catch and throw light with wild abandon, showering the space with radiance. It doubles as a nonpareil seconds counter, framed with brilliant-cut diamonds.

As with every Chanel timepiece, the design of the J12 Diamond Tourbillon Calibre 5 is paramount down to the smallest detail. Additional drops of diamond adorn the hands and crown, because there can never be an overabundance of the precious stone. The handsome Calibre 5 with 48 hours of power reserve is partially exposed on the front and fully displayed on the caseback, where the lion’s head emblem — the signature of Chanel Manufacture movements — can be found. The watch is dressed in black, the colour of elegance epitomised by the Little Black Dress, in two variations of high-tech ceramic: fully matte to accentuate the spinning showstopper, or glossy with baguette-cut diamonds on the bezel to maximise its brilliance.

Movement: Manual winding in-house Calibre 5 with flying tourbillon; 42-hour power reserve
Case: 38mm in ceramic; water-ressitant to 50m
Strap: Ceramic bracelet
Price: On application

Embark on a Summer Tour Down St. Tropez With Chanel

Image: Chanel

In July 2022, Chanel celebrated the links between fashion and music with a Mediterranean tour titled “Chanel Summer Tour”. Between fantasy and reality, the Chanel Spring Summer 2022 collection designed by Virginie Viard expresses an ethereal lightness. Bright, joyful silhouettes float amidst geometric structures in a graphic setting created by Xavier Veilhan. A decor evoking equestrian curves and constructive lines contrasts with airy silhouettes, delicate embroideries and precious flowers meant to welcome the silhouettes of the Spring Summer 2022 Ready-To-Wear and 2021/22 Métiers d’art shows, as well as the Chanel Coco Beach Collection.

Image: Chanel

The boutique is located in La Mistralée villa, a home away from home, presenting the brand’s various collections throughout the summer season, this elegant destination will be open from 8 April through to the end of September 2022. At the request of Virginie Viard, the Chanel ambassador Caroline de Maigret invited model Blesnya Minher and singer Angèle for the first stopover at the Chanel seasonal boutique in St. Tropez. The tour was accompanied by many other celebrities such as Chanel ambassadors Vanessa Paradis, Margot Robbie and Pharrell Williams.

Image: Chanel

On 12 and 13 July, a beige and black van with the double C logo was installed at the Villa La Mistralée, where Chanel has been taking up residence every summer for the past decade. Acting as a home away from home, the beige tones of the Roman opus travertine floor highlight the pinky-beige walls and the touches of black and white, allowing the villa to evoke the private sphere of Gabrielle Chanel.

Image: Chanel

It was in this welcoming atmosphere that the guests gathered, between games of pétanque, while the van transformed into a photo studio and the playing of vinyl records by musicians close to the House. The evening continued with a piano performance by Belgian born musician and Chanel ambassador, Angèle. It was then followed by a DJ set by songwriter Marine Neuilly. The following morning, guests attended a “Style Talk” — a conversation about style and allure between Caroline de Maigret and Blesnya Minher, where they discussed the heritage and inspiration behind Chanel latest collection and their impressions of the Chanel summer tour.

Overall, the two-day event was reminiscent of the cosmopolitan beach lifestyle of Monte Carlo. The celebration of Chanel’s history along Cote d’Azur was shown through sophisticated silhouettes of the collection and guests found themselves to be immersed in maison’s classic spirit of elegance, modernity and creativity.

Presenting Chanel’s various collections throughout the summer season, the seasonal boutique is now open till the end of September 2022.

Our favourite picks from Chanel Beauty Spring/Summer 2022 collection

A heritage dear to Chanel, La Pausa is once again at the heart of the house’s Spring/Summer 2022 beauty collection.

In the 1920s, Gabrielle Chanel had La Pausa built on the French Riviera as her sanctuary and escape for serenity. Conceived by Mademoiselle herself, the interior of La Pausa employs an effortless mix of white and beige, accentuated by soft touches of pink and grey. When spring arrives, sunlight fills the villa with warmth and golden rays.

Taking cues from the beauty of La Pausa, the Chanel Beauty Spring/Summer 2022 collection features a spectrum of warm, earthy shades to manifest that sunkissed post-vacation glow.

Scroll down to discover our favourite picks from the new LA PAUSA DE CHANEL collection:

ROUGE COCO BAUME

Inspired by the summer garden at La Pausa, the ROUGE COCO BAUME line offers six serotonin-boosting shades ranging from deep burgundy to dewy pink. This hybrid of colour and care owes its moisturising power to a mindful blend of naturally derived Olive Oleoactive, shea butter and the signature Hydra Boost Complex.

We love how the silky, buildable formula makes defining and contouring so much easier. Get a sheer wash of colour with one swipe or layer it up for a juicier, semi-matte finish.

LES 4 OMBRES – MÉDITERRANÉEN

This newest edition OF LES 4 OMBRES plays with the nuances of sunlight to evoke the serenity of Mediterranean. All the shades come in a satiny formula with shimmery finish to catch the light.

The colours are lovely on their own, so you can wear them alone for a subtle smokey eye or play with the contrast to create depth and intensify the glow.

BLUSH LUMIÈRE

Personally, this is our favourite from this collection. The BLUSH LUMIÈRE has two shades: Pêche Rosée, a shimmery pink coral to create a sun-kissed flush and Brun Roussi, a luminous terracotta brown to dial up the warmth and glam when the sun goes down.

Apply this creamy powder blush onto your cheeks, cheekbones and temples using edge of the half-moon brush and smudge it out with the flat side for soft, precise illumination.

Chanel 22 is the new classic bag you need

A bag that took the runway by storm in Paris, the new Chanel 22 bag makes it official debut with a bag campaign starring Lily-Rose Depp, Margaret Qualley and Whitney Peak.

Through the lens of the photography duo Inez & Vinoodh, the campaign travels from Los Angeles to Palm Springs, and eventually, New York, to capture an intimate glimpse into the life of the Chanel muses.

“Inez & Vinoodh brought my closest circle in on this shoot. These images are like a “high fashion” filter of how I’d spend the perfect day with the people I love most. I really value time alone and can disappear into my own world for days.”

– Whitney Peak

“The CHANEL 22 bag is a perfect example of Virginie’s natural ability to create pieces that empower women. This is a bag that accommodates a woman’s every need. It’s a bag made for a woman who works and reads and maybe even carries around a coloring book for her kids or snacks, all while looking stylish as heck.”

-Margaret Qualley

“I would fill it with everything I needed to have the perfect date with myself – books, headphones, a notebook and pen, my makeup essentials, and maybe even a little sweater or scarf for when it gets cold – and I’d set out on my own adventure!” -Lily-Rose Depp

Debuted at Chanel Spring Summer 2022 runway, the Chanel 22 bag is the younger sibling of the Chanel 19 bag created in 2019. With a name paying homage to Chanel’s numerology and the N°22 fragrance created in 1922, it is destined to be another modern icon of the house.

Emphasising the freedom of movement, the Chanel 22 bag has a soft and supple silhouette with practical interior that makes for an everyday ally. It comes in backpack and handbag styles, equipped with a magnetic button, purse-like drawstrings, a zipped pocket, and a detachable pouch.

Meanwhile, its metal and leather interlaced chain and “CHANEL” signature make it a recognisable new classic.

Watches and Wonders 2022 Day 2 Highlights

Image: Chanel

It’s day 2 of Watches and Wonders Geneva 2022, and we go beyond mind-blowing today. Patek Philippe was so astonishing we had to take a second appointment, but that’s for later. We begin not with a watch but with extraordinary objects. That means Van Cleef & Arpels, and a time for magic, if not the time down to the precise second. The art and craft of watchmaking enables automatons such as the Fontaine Aux Oiseaux and the Reveries de Berylline, and of course the Planetarium Automaton. That last one is a massive work that scales the much-loved Midnight Planetarium up (to the tune of half a metre, no less).

When you see something like the Fontaine Aux Oiseaux, your faith in humanity will be restored. Words can’t capture what this creation means but we’ll link a video below. In fact, there are videos for all three automatons but you’ll be no wiser for watching them. On the other hand, you might feel better about the world we live in, and that’s no small feat. But that’s for another time, because now we do have to look at a few wristwatches. Like the Van Cleef & Arpels creations — including the Lady Arpels Heures Floral, which is much more than it appears to be — the other watches we looked at today are simply inspirational.

The watchmaking prowess of Chanel has achieved new heights with the J12 Diamond Tourbillon Calibre 5. While Chanel has flying Tourbillons in its collection, it now has one made completely in-house. The watch deserves a better introduction and we will try to do it justice later. It has specific particularities that make it entirely a Chanel beauty, albeit a complicated one. An interesting side note here is the matte ceramic in use, which appears both technically impressive and aesthetically promising to our eyes.

The wow-factor journey does not end there because we must discuss the Cartier Masse Mysterieuse, which Hodinkee’s Jack Forster calls wondrously strange. First of all, it is a mystery watch that shows all its tricks but conceals how it works. The entire movement is contained inside the oscillating mass, otherwise known as the rotor, and seems to be disconnected from the hands entirely. To understand this watch, you have to go back in time to 2011, and the magnificent Astroregulateur. I am particularly tickled here because I caught this origin when the Cartier presenter did not. Well, I am sometimes unintelligible so there is that…

Cartier Masse Mystérieuse
Image: Cartier

Completely intelligible is the Patek Philippe Ref. 5326G, a watch with something like eight patents hiding beneath the dial. It is an annual calendar with dual time zone function, but that explanation certainly does nothing for the wow factor. Okay, what makes this amazing is that it is virtually impossible to desynchronise the indications, whether you move the hands backwards or forwards. The main time setting function is accomplished with just one crown, although there are pushers for independent adjustment; we do not know why you would need them. Well, we kind of do know why but we want to run it by Patek Philippe again before we spill it.

Image: Patek Philippe

We’ll close with a fourth wall break. These kinds of stories are written on the fly, often in little 15 minute breaks on a phone, without so much as a press release to inform them. We do our best to refine them and check them, but there is a price to be paid for speed. We shall certainly return to some of the watches noted here in the weeks and months to come.

We tried the N°1 de CHANEL by Chanel Beauty

A new dawn is breaking at Chanel Beauty as it unveils N°1 de CHANEL, a brand new line encapsulating Mademoiselle Chanel’s holistic beauty vision through minimalist, eco-conscious approach.

Whilst the white Camellia leads the charge in the cult Hydra Beauty line, the Czar, a red variety, is at the heart of N°1 de CHANEL. The red camellia’s evergreen leaves and winter blooms have led to the discovery of the flower’s exceptional ability to sustain skin resilience and address skin senescence as we come of age. To harness the power of the red camellia, Chanel Beauty embarked on a 10-year quest and eventually introducing the N°1 de CHANEL, named as a nod to the iconic N°5.

Without squandering any of the precious bloom, N°1 de CHANEL unlocks the full benefits of the red camellia by bringing together its revitalizing properties-packed extracts, refreshing floral water, nourishing oil and yeast extract that helps fortify skin barrier.

So, think of the formulas as a skin-strengthening shield that revitalises the skin and protects it from external aggressors at the same time. And with a mission to keep beauty minimal and green (and chic), the entire collection is housed in eco-designed packaging using glass, bio-based and recyclable materials. Cellophane is ditched and all paper booklets are replaced by smart QR codes.

L’Officiel Malaysia’s verdict on the Red Camellia Revitalising Serum and Red Camellia Revitalising Cream:

It has been a month since I introduced the Red Camellia Revitalising Serum and Red Camellia Revitalising Cream to my AM/PM skincare routine and they keep those unwelcome back-to-office skin changes at bay like a dream. My sensitive skin behaves despite major lifestyle changes including the daily commute that leads to more exposure to urban pollutants and wearing the mask for an extended period of time.

The Red Camellia Revitalising Serum and Red Camellia Revitalising Cream are formulated with 95% ingredients of natural origin to address the early stage of skin ageing. The serum, powered by 75% of camellia derivatives, has a rich yet dewy texture that sinks into the skin right away.

It reawakens and brings calmness to stressed, tired skin with just a drop or two. To encourage the result, I layer the cream over the serum. Airy to the touch, the cream promises to quench the skin, refine pores and lines and shield the skin from environmental aggressors.

N°1 de CHANEL is more than just a skincare line, but a lifestyle that inspires to seek the finer things in life. From formula to packaging, the art of thoughtful minimalism runs through the entire range.

The tres chic red bottles are noticeably lightweight compared to the CHANEL Sublimage line, cellophane wrapping and paper booklets are dropped, all product information and guides are just one scan away.

N°1 de CHANEL is now available at all CHANEL Fragrance & Beauty boutiques and CHANEL Fragrance & Beauty E-Shop.

10 luxurious jewellery pieces of this Fall/Winter 2021

From Chanel, Chopard to Piaget, these top-of-the-line jewellery pieces definitely will elevate your appearance.

Chanel

It’s the 100th anniversary of the iconic N°5 perfume and Patrice Leguéreau has just the present to celebrate the milestone. The Chanel Fine Jewelry Creation Studio director has crafted over a hundred stunning haute joaillerie pieces for Collection N°5 and they include this Golden Sillage bracelet in yellow gold and platinum with yellow sapphires, spessartite garnets and diamonds.

Chopard

Everything in Chopard’s Red Carpet collection is literally breathtaking—one does not simply enumerate the components in each piece without gasping for air. This cuff bracelet, for one, features Mandarin garnets, Paraiba tourmalines, pastel sapphires, white opals, pink quartz, tsavorites, tanzanites, kunzite, amethysts, aquamarines, beryls, topaz, citrines, rubies, tourmalines and diamonds.

De Beers

Untamed nature serves as the backdrop for De Beers’ Reflections of Nature high jewellery range. Capturing the maze of waterways, floodplains and islands of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, the Okavango Grace creations, particularly these climber earrings, boast rough and polished diamonds in a true-to-life colour scheme of green, pink, brownish pink, purple and grey.

Dior

A decade has passed since Victoire de Castellane came out with her lush Bal des Roses collection. Now, once again paying a tribute to Christian Dior and his favourite flower, the creative director introduces the sparkling new RoseDior range, which brings forth a slew of exquisite designs such as these RoseDior earrings in textured yellow gold with diamonds.

Gucci

The oh-so whimsical garden at Gucci continues to grow with the expansion of the Hortus Deliciarum high jewellery collection. Echoing the eclectic quixotism of creative director Alessandro Michele’s kaleidoscopic universe, the new batch is inspired by the mesmeric hues of the sky at various times of the day which is perfectly illustrated by this classic cocktail ring.

Louis Vuitton

Diving deeper into its past, Louis Vuitton takes its devotees back to the very beginning—when its founder embarked on that journey across France to realise his dreams—for the Bravery high jewellery assortment. The Arrow ring cleverly narrates this account, serving as a metaphor for his odyssey and a literal interpretation of his legacy with the incorporation of the emblematic V motif.

Hermès

An icon at Hermès has received the ultimate star treatment with the brand’s latest jewellery entry. The Kellymorphose line, just as its name suggests, takes after the legendary Kelly bag defined by a strong and assertive form, side straps, clasp, padlock and key-holder—elements that are present in the pieces under the banner notably this Kelly Gavroche necklace.

Piaget

Where there’s darkness, there’s light. Promising to illuminate even in the bleakest of nights, Piaget’s Extraordinary Lights high jewellery pieces are imbued with the most spectacular light phenomenon. The Magical Aurora necklace, for instance, is bound to set the sky ablaze with the verdant hue of its emeralds and the unparalleled sparkle of its diamonds.

Habib

Springtime stretches all year long at Habib and the blossoming of The Bouquet in the fall season shows us just that. This stunning frangipani-inspired brooch, handcrafted in a restful combination of 18k rose and white gold, exudes the feeling of unfiltered femininity as the pink petals unfurl under the morning sun and unveil 391 pieces of brilliant-cut diamonds.

Tiffany & Co.

Nature’s most vivid chromatic displays are turned into mesmerising works of art at Tiffany & Co. as the jeweller releases its 2021 Blue Book collection. Themed Colours of Nature, the new roster is brimming with one-of-a-kind masterworks including this delicate butterfly brooch in 18k yellow gold peppered with purple sapphires and dazzling diamonds.

Chanel Beauty evokes the duality of pink for Fall/Winter 2020

Chanel Beauty (@chanel.beautypresents its latest Fall/Winter 2020 collection, which is inspired by the original LES 4 OMBRES eyeshadow Candeur et Expérience palette from Fall 2016 collection.

We’ve come across the countless definition of pink, most of the time associated with gender and romance; but this season, Chanel Global Creative Makeup and Color Designer Lucia Pica rethinks the colour pink to evoke its different allure – from innocence to experience.

The collection starts with a beautiful interpretation of pink – the passion and power of red softened by the purity, openness and completeness of white. So what is the spectrum of pink you want to be today?

From the iconic LES 4 OMBRES eyeshadow to the multi-use blush stick, scroll down to discover Chanel Beauty Fall/Winter 2020 collection:

BAUME ESSENTIEL ROSÉE

The Baume Essentiel Rosée encapsulates those sweet years with a flush of tender pink, fearless and glowing. Sculpt the cheeks or apply on your lips whenever you need a little shimmer and shine. The multi-use blush promises a rosy glow that flatter different skin tones and beauty looks.

LES 4 OMBRES

Each palette is a duet, the innocence and lightness on one half of the palette gives way to experience and intensity in the other.

The Fall/Winter 2020 collection introduces the debut of Candeur et Provocation and Candeur et Séduction, in addition to the reissue of Candeur et Expérience from the Fall 2016 collection, every palette features four greatly buildable shades with matte and satin finishes, perfect to define and give depth to the looks.

ROUGE COCO, ROUGE COCO FLASH AND ROUGE ALLURE INK FUSION

Chanel Beauty Fall/Winter 2020 collection offers a rich and splendid selection of colours for the lips. Far from just a pretty, clichéd colour, pink becomes something daring and radical.

Inside Chanel: Gabrielle Chanel at the heart of cinema creation

This year, Chanel is releasing a new series of Inside Chanel, which is themed around Gabrielle Chanel and the Arts. In the latest chapter, Chanel delves into the Parisian house’s legacy of cinema and how the Mademoiselle had revolutionised her generation of women.

Gabrielle Chanel was born in the age when cinema was introduced to the world. “It is through cinema that fashion can be imposed today,”  she said and as a fashion designer, her intuition has driven her to embark on a new quest of creations.

She was well aware of the infinite possibility of cinema, and her idea to liberate the body and endow it with rhythm took shape as moving pictures became the hub of arts.

Gabrielle Chanel made her entry into the cinema in 1931 with a Hollywood project Tonight or Never, where Gloria Swanson wears a wardrobe designed by Chanel and a bottle of N°5 perfume slips into the frames. Back in Paris, she collaborated with various directors and designed the costume for the female roles in movies including Marcel Carné on Le Quai des Brumes (1938), Jean Renoir on La Marseillaise (1938), The Human Beast (1938) and The Rules of the Game (1939).

During the time of pre-war cinema, Gabrielle Chanel has established her very own code of cinema costume. Every cut and fabric has formed the architecture on a scene and the feminine masculine styles on screens have redefined the way how women dress.

From the golden age of Hollywood to the French New Wave, explore Gabrielle Chanel’s legacy of cinema in the chapter 28 of Inside Chanel:

Chanel’s iconic tweed gets translated high jewellery collection

It wouldn’t be a Chanel spectacle without its timeless tweed lined up on the runway. The Scottish woollen cloth has been a hallmark of the Parisian brand since the early ’20s when Gabrielle Chanel came upon the sportswear belonging to her lover, the Duke of Westminster.

Taken by the supple fabric, the designer began adapting tweed into her womenswear line — possibly setting the whole “borrowing from the boys” trend in motion.

Tweed Brode earrings, bracelet and necklace.

The house of Chanel now reimagines the beloved material to turn in a score of dazzling jewels that’s Tweed de Chanel. Referencing Mademoiselle Chanel’s standard of procuring only the softest wool for her ready-to-wear, the maison ingeniously captures the languid character of tweed using the techniques developed by the Chanel High Jewellery Workshop.

Tweed Chaine earrings, bracelet and necklace.

Here, exquisite gemstones are layered with precious metals to evoke the original inspiration. The Tweed Chaine bracelet, for instance, channels the warp and weft of tweed with yellow gold and platinum. Elevating the aesthetic of the weave, the artisans bring diamonds, cultured pearls and tsavorites of different cuts into play to mount them in an alternating pattern.

Tweed Graphique earrings, bracelet and necklace.

More than just a looker, the Tweed de Chanel necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings and brooches promise the wearer a similar comfort of the feeling one gets when donning Chanel’s iconic collarless tweed jacket.

All 45 unique novelties across the nine chapters of the collection are fashioned to coddle the skin as each setting is pared down to the minimum in pursuit of reducing the asperity of the grain among the gems.

Karl For Ever: The grand tribute to Karl Lagerfeld

he home ground to Karl Lagerfeld and his preferred location for Chanel runway shows, the Grand Palais saw a beautiful tribute and exhibition, titled “Karl For Ever“, hosted by the house of Chanel, Fendi and Karl Lagerfeld to honour the legendary godfather of fashion for his amazing work throughout the years.

Curated, staged and directed by Robert Carsen, the one-off Karl For Ever event on 20th June 2019 saw the attendance of over 2,500 guests, which included the likes of Hollywood stars, Karl’s muses, friends and family of the fashion houses, industry insiders and more, at the Grand Palais.

Within Karl For Ever, guests were greeted with a tapestry of films that documented Karl’s journey throughout his life, interspersed with testimonials from people who knew him. The tapestry also showcased generous “live” contributions of highly talented actors, musicians, dancers who interpreted some of the music and literature Karl loved.

Actresses Tilda Swinton, Fanny Ardant, Cara Delevingne and Helen Mirren, all close confidants and muses of Karl Lagerfeld, recited and read excerpts from works by his favourite authors like Virginia Woolf, Stéphane Mallarmé, Colette and Edith Sitwell as their final goodbyes to the legend.

Others who performed on that momentous day include Pharrell Williams, dancer Lil Buck and violinist Charlie Siem.

The walls of Grand Palais were dressed with 56 giant enlargements of portraitstaken throughout his life by the most world-renowned photographers. The portraits were designed into a special setting by Robert Carsen and inspired by Karl’s favourite colours: black and white enhanced with a touch of red.

From grocery stores to casinos, waterfalls and space stations, each and every Chanel show produced is a show-stopper that headlines Paris fashion week.

Alain Wertheimer, CEO of CHANEL, said: “Thanks to his creative genius, generosity and exceptional intuition, Karl Lagerfeld was ahead of his time, which widely contributed to the House of CHANEL’s success throughout the world. Today, not only have I lost a friend, but we have all lost an extraordinary creative mind to whom I gave carte blanche in the early 1980s to reinvent the brand.”

Chanel has announced that right now, “Virginie Viard, Director of CHANEL’s Fashion Creation Studio and Karl Lagerfeld’s closest collaborator for more than 30 years, has been entrusted by Alain Wertheimerwith the creative work for the collections, so that the legacy of Gabrielle Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld can live on.:

We would like to thank Lagerfeld for all his has done for the world of fashion, arts, beauty and culture.

May you rest in peace.

3 things we love about the Chanel Cruise 2019 “La Pausa” collection

Cruise 2019 has truly been a total French experience as some of the biggest fashion labels has chosen it to show their collection – including Chanel’s spectacular La Pausa show.

Named after Mademoiselle Chanel’s villa in the French Riviera, the show took the world by surprise with the construction of a gigantic cruise liner inside the Grand Palais as the runway venue.

And just earlier this month, the La Pausa collection has also travelled to Bangkok for its second show before hitting Chanel boutiques worldwide on 19th November 2018 including Chanel at KLCC.

In merriment of the La Pausa collection hitting stores, here are 3 reasons why we love this collection:

#1: The Venue & Decor

From supermarkets to brasseries and airports, Chanel never ceases to amaze with its extravagant setups but the La Pausa collection might just be the best we have seen so far as Chanel built a real-life cruise liner inside the Grand Palais, fully decked with a dock and bellowing seawater.

Inspired by Mademoiselle Chanel’s villa in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, the cruise liner brings to life the love for nautical themes by both Karl Lagerfeld and Mademoiselle Chanel.

And that served as the key point of the collection, where Chanel takes the idea of “cruise” quite literally and in the most stunning way ever.

#2: The Fashion

From Biarritz to Deauville, Les Eaux De Chanel has shown us Chanel’s love for everything sea-related and the Cruise 2019 collection is one that pays homage to the first Chanel Cruise collection designed by Coco Chanel in 1919.

From straw boat hats to boxy shorts and oversized blazers, Karl really took us on a journey to experience what a Chanel resort holiday would feel like.

Our personal favourites from the runway are definitely the La Pausa sweater, the graphic blue-coloured print and those amazingly cinched waists that brings leisure to new heights of luxury.

Rather than a regular cruise collection, Karl veered the helm and created a collection that is made to transcend seasons and countries. From a reinvented tweed to a diaphanous lace and a colorama imbued with sunshine, the La Pausa collection is one that takes its guests on a dream-like fashion cruise – be it the Mediterranean, the South China Sea or the Caribbean.

#3: The Bags, Shoes & Jewels

And what about a Chanel show be without an unstoppable desire for its bags, jewellery and shoes?

This Cruise 2019, some of our favourites include the new Chanel Boy in an elongated silhouette, the rescue buoy shaped bag-on-chain and that black-and-white handbag featuring the La Pausa cruiseliner.

For its accessories and jewels, the La Pausa collection features a series of pearl and jewelled cuffs and bracelets that fit perfectly for the ultimate cruise look in pinks and whites.

Also, we take special note for the fluffy berets adorned with the Chanel buoy – definitely a must for the next fashion week!

The Chanel Cruise 2019 “La Pausa” collection is now available at the Chanel flagship at Suria KLCC. Find out more on chanel.com.
