Top 3 Trends of Milan Men’s Spring Summer 2023

Utilitarianism has reemerged in Italy’s style capital during Milan Men’s Spring Summer 2023. The collections beckoned nostalgia with denim and lightweight fabrics that are making a comeback when the practical trend was last seen on the runways of Spring Summer 2018. The refreshed silhouettes are now reemerging on the runways showcasing the utilitarian traits of detailing, practicality and elevated styling.

Lightweight, Laidback & Relaxed

Typical of the leading houses like Fendi, Prada and Dolce & Gabbana, a compiled boldness became apparent on the runways. It often came through with alluring lightweight materials, where sheer fabrics acted as a signature. The Spring Summer 2023 update was all about sensible juxtaposition as seen on Dolce & Gabbana incorporating lightweight see-through materials with wide-fit distressed denim jeans. Some looks were a perfectly tailored tuxedo worn over ripped denim, while others paired a sensual sheer black lace shirt with oversized double-breasted jackets. Creative freedom, newness and daring experimentation were well encompassed in this collection. Most of the Dolce & Gabbana’s looks were familiar silhouettes from their past seasons, which presented like an updated déjà vu.

Silvia Venturini Fendi created earthy and well-balanced looks for a planet-conscious generation that reflects shades ranging from soft cambric fabric to hearty brick colours, it merges into a new motif created from weather mapping images of the weather patterns. Fendi’s collection evidently brought forth simplicity and elevation on a higher level of wearability. The denim frays at the hem of the jeans together with the embroidery accents of the bags recall an edgy outlook. “It’s about a balance of decoration and simplicity,” Venturini Fendi shared. “An ageless sense of freedom to play, as we rediscover the luxury of free time.”

While imagining from previous seasons, Prada was challenging dressing norms, looking to prime men with the idea of tailored short shorts paired with knitted tops or leather jackets. It was apparent this time with the season to create a laidback Spring Summer look.

Kean and Veronica of the family-managed Italian fashion house, Etro, have also energised the short shorts for their collection, to make them suitable for next year’s humid weather when lighter garments will propel the season forward. Mesh textures were adorned to reveal bare skin while shorts expose nude legs. Tod’s were also seen in tailored shorts well above the knees, with blazers and utility jackets paired for the top in this Spring Summer 2023 outing. The versatile shorts could be worn next summer without worrying about heat waves ruining the look.

Denim Fever

Apart from Etro, the cultivated mid-western look was also emphasised as seen in Dolce & Gabbana, where denim was the material in focus. The influence of Williams’s sleek industrial style and the tactical chic of Alyx evolved a little further at Milan Men’s Summer Spring 2023, where he blended denim with utilitarian outfits. There were signature details such as the origami pockets that are distinctive in Alyx’s tailoring, conveyed in denim. Prada decided to bring equilibrium between comfort pieces in contrast with utility and fitting jackets, proving how denim is versatile for everyday styling.

Image: JW Anderson

As for JW Anderson, the designer took a different approach. He wanted to form a collection that pushed perceptions of modern clothing. Known for his eccentric designs, Anderson’s collection embodied witty wearable assemblages such as broken skateboards, compact disc prints, barcodes and holes on shirts that mimic cheese, adding cheekiness to the collection. The tongue-in-cheek designs were paired with heavily distressed denim that offers an elevated look. However, the mix and match between denim and experimental tops gave a fresh look for the Spring Summer 2023 season and definitely head-tuners.

Exaggerated Casualness

Most labels featured loose and baggy pants on their runway. The drapes flawlessly shape light and relaxed outlooks. The light material of cotton twill was employed to construct the garments of Ermenegildo Zegna and Etro’s Spring Summer 2023. This meant it could be worn both dressed up in formal or dressed down in casual. The embodiment of the exaggerated fit for Versace showcases how the wide tailoring flair of the pants matched with vibrant jackets perfect for any show-stopping moment.

The comeback of utilitarianism has made it evident that the world is ready to head out in comfort and style, and Milan Men’s Spring Summer 2023 has brought some nostalgia but also newness to the runways.

The new chapter of Fendi opens with iconic bags for Fall/Winter 2021

First making its debut on the runway in February, the Fendi Fall/Winter 2021 collection has been buzzing with excitement for all as the world marvel at the brilliance of Kim Jones as the creative director at Fendi.

Hot off his debut in Spring/Summer 2021, Kim Jones continues to prove himself as the perfect talent for Fendi, wherein Fall/Winter 2021, he decides to explore and pay homage to the legacy of the women in the Fendi family – bringing to light the femininity and savoir-faire celebrated at the Maison.

In a release, he says, “The Fendi family are women of intellect who work hard – and that’s what I wanted to celebrate. A powerful dynasty.”

EVOLVING AND ELEVATING THE READY-TO-WEAR TO ABSOLUTE LUXURY

And the stage was set and the runway presentation was a resounding success. The wardrobes of the five Fendi sisters served as the starting point of the collection’s journey – from the bell sleeves of a washed mink and bonded suede coat to the pinstripes of their office attire, which is now rendered in silken shirting or perfectly proportioned wool tailoring.

The entire collection amplifies and elevates the sisters’ personal style into a fashion dream – one that is luxurious, contemporary, confident and made for the fashion trailblazers of today.

And that leads us to the bags on the runway, where we witnessed a new chapter of Fendi being unfolded – where new silhouettes, innovations and designs surfaced to take our breath away.

FENDI FIRST BAG: THE DEBUT

Directed by Silvia Venturini Fendi, the bags of Fendi have always been iconic stunners that are set to take over the trending page and soon become a forever classic to be cherished and loved.

The top contender for this spot in Fall/Winter 2021 is the Fendi First bag, which pays homage to the off-kilter irreverence of the brand. Here, the FENDI monogram is tilted into the frame of a clutch and is presented in a deconstructed silhouette with myriad variations: from a size roomy enough to fit a tablet to a micro pouch strung as jewellery, and is rendered in shearling, leather, and exotics.

And there are many ways to wear the bag, Kim Jones shows us that clutching it in your arm makes the better statement for fashion and pose.

THE STAPLES: REIMAGINED

The Fendi Peekaboo continues to reign supreme as one of Fendi’s go-to staples where this season sees a refresh where it is distorted into new proportions and decorated with Selleria details. The new Fendi Peekaboo are all designed with the ISEEU accordion-style, where it is made to easily reveal the interior of the bag.

Each of the Peekabo seen on the runway presents different textures, finishing and accessories including teddy bear shearling, python print and grained leather, where some are decorated with a micro version of the Fendi First.

TO BAGS AND BEYOND

On the also witnessed the rebirth of Fendi Baguette in new designs, from fringed looks to furry details and even one constructed fully out of solid wood in a dark chestnut shade. While not the first time, wood is used to make a Fendi Baguette, the new reiteration served well as a fun reminder of the infinite possibilities of the silhouette.

To complement these stunning designs, Delfina Delettrez Fendi (daughter of Silvia) introduced a plethora of graphic accessories, titled Fendi O’Lock. Here, Delfina plays with the Fendi logo where it is transformed into its carabineer form, and come with padlocks that can only be opened by dialing FENDI.

Other fine touches spotted on these accessories include wax seal pendants that feature the playful Karligraphy and metal cuffs with leather and Selleria details.

Finishing off with a spring on your step, feast your eyes on the Fendi First shoes – a design that showcases architectural beauty in the form of a vertically inverted “F” that gives the illusion of a “no-heel” heel. Beautifully crafted in soft leather, these mules are definitely one to get us pumped to head out the streets in the coming months!

Fendi releases a new episode of #MeAndMyPeekaboo, starring the American R&B duo Chloe and Halle (@chloexhalle), as well as the house’s new Peekaboo ISeeU bag.

Fendi unfolds the secrets of the Peekaboo bags

Fendi releases a new video exploring the Roman house’s craftmanship of Laser-Cut, Interlace and Intarsio, which are used to create new exciting looks for the iconic Fendi Peekaboo bag.

The story begins with Fendi’s headquarters at Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, where the time-honoured architecture serves as a prelude to the savoir-faire to mirror the symmetrical and simplistic silhouettes of the new Peekaboo. The four protagonists are then revealed, each featuring Fendi’s beautiful takes on distinct materials and workmanship.

The Fendi Peekaboo X-Lite

FENDI PEEKABOO BAG LASERCUT

To bring this Peekaboo X-Lite to life, a resin-treated leather is laser cut to achieve the FENDI script, finished with striped Pequin pattern and FF monogram-embossed suede pocket.

The Fendi Intarsio Peekaboo

FENDI PEEKABOO BAG INLAY

The Intarsio (Inlay) Peekaboo bag brings together Fendi’s iconic Selleria Cuoio Romano leather, mink and fur.

On a base of hand-carved leather, the three materials are layered to create volume for the bag, where the first layer of leather and the mink on the outside will be sewn and joined by hand.

The Fendi Interlace Peekaboo

The Interlace Peekaboo channels the most traditional workmanship. Leather stripes are braided into knots by hand and finalized with a maxi metal needle; isn’t it amazing how the handwoven leather put up the structural silhouette of Peekaboo?

From 19th to 28th of October 2018, Italy hosted a festival in Rome called Lux Formae, supported by Fendi and produced by Solid Light for Videocittà. In celebration of the bond between contemporary art and fashion, the spectacular project mapping is the largest project ever seen in Italy yet. The upscale video mapping is created through an avant-garde medium by an internationally acclaimed artist – Laslzo Bordos, and showcased at a unique location, Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana.

Lux Formae is a festival that pays tribute to the audiovisual industry.
