Ostrea, a new seafood paradise at The Edison George Town Hotel

Fresh and premium ingredients? Drool-worthy menu? Visually-pleasing decor? Ostrea, the Oyster & Seafood Bar ticks all the boxes.

With an ambition to fill the void in the Penang culinary scene, Ostrea is the dining paradise where you can savour an array of fine seafood. In collaboration with The Edison, a colonial boutique hotel located in Georgetown, the food haven with airy alfresco ambience pleases every diner with all things briny such as mussels, scallops, fish, prawns, clams and oysters.

Ostrea quenches the cravings of oyster lovers with molluscs flown all the way from Scotland the likes of Fine de Claire, Loch Fyne Rock and Loch Fyne Angel. Simply savour it on its own without any seasoning for a headily fresh taste or choose your pick between palate-whetting mignonette sauce or citrusy lemon juice to spice up the raw taste of oyster.

Apart from the irresistible bivalve fare, there is a seasonal menu meticulously curated by the master chef of Ostrea, which changes monthly to ensure the gastronomic journey of every diner ends on a delightful and satisfying note.

The menu this month is the Tasting Menu for One. Plating up not one but six remarkably delectable dishes, the menu is an exciting affair made up of fresh seafood and tantalising recipe. If you are sold on the menu, get ready to treat yourself to dishes such as Salmon Roe, Smoked Golden Hebridean Mussels, Loch Fyne Smoked Salmon and Scottish King Scallop – with flavourful condiments like sour cream cheese, basil pesto and garlic cream sauce to bring the dishes to the next level.

REVIEW: Rosewood Bangkok with our point of view

Standing along the busy Ploenchit Road is Rosewood Bangkok, the 30-storey hotel is one of the latest additions to Thailand’s booming hospitality scene offering an experience reflective of its locale. Here, the rich Thai culture can be seen from the get-go as the building is designed to resemble the “wai”—the Thai gesture of hands pressed together in greeting.

The design duo of Tandem Architects, Kohn Pederson Fox and Celia Chu Design Associates, continues to pay homage to the country’s capital, most notably with the dramatic 10-storey indoor waterfall. The element of water is particularly important to the Thais as it symbolises peace and harmony, and it is often used in rites and rituals.

Aside from the statement-making features, a big part that contributes to the hotel’s design splendour is the consistency in the décor. Rich materials and finishes are expressed in a soothing, neutral color palette. This is especially evident in the 159 guestrooms, where the modern interiors are complemented with commanding views of the metropolis.

Rosewood Bangkok also upholds its “A Sense of Place” philosophy with plenty of collaborative works with the local talents such as interdisciplinary artist Jiandyin, who created the metalwork sculpture in the entryway. Meanwhile, the hotel’s “Art Connection” area regularly showcases multimedia works by emerging Thai artists such as Kittaya Poolsawatdi.

When it comes to gastronomic offerings, the Thai delicacies at the Lakorn European Brasserie are a must-try. But if guests aren’t feeling so adventurous, the restaurant also offers classic Western dishes. Those who prefer healthier selections will find the farm-to-table concept at G&O organic café quite appealing.

Cocktail connoisseurs are similarly pampered at Rosewood Bangkok. Located on the 30th floor of the property, Lennon’s is a speakeasy-style bar meets home-recording studio. Endowed with a large collection of vinyl records, the bar sells handcrafted cocktails themed to favourite musical genres of past decades and revives classic cocktails with rare vintage spirits dating between the 1940s to the 1970s.

REVIEW: M Social Singapore, a stay turned adventure that you need to experience

As Malaysians, Singapore is a destination we frequent a lot – for its close proximity and countless lifestyle excitement – and for that, we constantly look for a unique hotel experience to enhance our trip there.

That’s when M Social hotel comes into play with its impeccable service and ambience that can turn a simple hotel stay into an adventure. Nestled in the buzzing neighbourhood of Robertson Quay, where a multitude of entertainment, dining hotspots and cultural experience find their home, there’s no reason not to pay this hotel a visit.

Team L’Officiel has the opportunity to pay a visit recently to indulge in all it has to offer and here’s why we think a stay in M Social can very well turn into an exciting adventure for you!

CHECKING IN

Upon arrival at M Social, the first thing that got us excited was the visual presentation of its lobby and reception area. Vibrating with chic modern vibes, each element within the space is planned with care and incorporated with various contemporary art pieces – from the tiles to its centrepiece and even wallpaper.

Like many modern contemporary hotels, check-in is made extremely convenient where you can expedite the process with its self-check-in counter that will scan your travel documents, track your room reservation and prepare your room keys instantaneously.

Of course, there will also be staff stationed at the lobby to assist you, should there be any questions, and to send your luggage straight to your room.

YOUR ROOM

When we talk about rooms available, M Social has plenty of variations prepared including the Alcove rooms, (a room designed with an alcove ceiling to mirror an attic-like experience) and the Loft rooms (a two-storey space that separates the sleep and lounge experience).

Even within the two options, you can further select whether you want a scenic view or a terrace setting, where you get a miniature personal garden to enjoy some peace and quiet.

For us, we opted for the Loft Gallery Room, where you have your bath, sleep and closet on the ground level and a cosy study area on the mezzanine level. Compact, yet spacious (thanks to the two-level setting), you get a spectacular floor-to-ceiling window for an elevated view of the surrounding neighbourhood. Rest assured, sleek blinds are installed for your privacy.

Another thing we appreciate of the loft setting is how clever M Social plans its interior where each nook and cranny is utilised to its potential without wasting space – a sentiment fit for the new generation of minimalist.

DISCOVERING M SOCIAL

After settling down and unpack, it is time to go on a mini excursion to discover the many facilities of the hotel. First stop, we have to highlight the outdoor swimming pool. Being further upstream of the Singapore River and on the edge of Downtown Singapore, M Social provides the perfect escape for you to enjoy a quiet and relaxing day by the pool.

Even if you are not up for sunbathing or a swim, you can lounge with a book and cocktail in hand for a sweet R&R.

After the quick session at the pool, maybe it is time to grab a bite and their resident eatery Beast & Butterflies is a favourable option where they serve an array of Modern Asian Cuisine that combines Eastern and Western flavours. Chic, well-decorated and stocking up a delectable menu, Beast & Butterflies is also a hotspot where locals gather for a quick Happy Hour and dinner.

Beast & Butterflies aside, you have plenty of dining options for every meal of the day, thanks to M Social’s location. Along the stretch at Robertson Quay, you can find an array of bars, bistros, cafés and restaurants to choose from including the popular PS Cafe, Common Man Coffee Roasters and Super Loco.

Or if you are looking to head out to the city, many tourist spots are within 10 – 20 minutes of walking distance including Chinatown, Clarke Quay and National Gallery Singapore. There is also a free shuttle bus provided to chauffeur you to Harbourfront and Buona Vista areas.

AN AUTOMATED SERVICE TO YOUR DOORSTEP

After a long day out and it is time to head back to your room to unwind and if you are are in need of simple amenities from a bottle of water, a can of coke or an extra towel, you can utilise the AURA robot, an automated room service robot that can deliver itself right to your doorstep.

M Social is actually one of the world’s first hotel to deploy this kind of room service and while it sounds simple, to see it in action during your stay can be a rather fascinating and novel experience!

The world’s first 360° Infinity Pool

In the day, sunlight percolates the Infinity Pool and the cast acrylic bottom to illuminate the chamber beneath with an alluring, shimmering bluish tint. Hold your breath as you enter the Pool via a rotating spiral stairwell inspired by a submarine hatch-door.

The World’s First 360° Infinity Pool

Ever ready to push the boundaries of engineering, or in this case, remove the apparent edges, U.K.-based Compass Pool released its CGI rendering showing a 360° see-through Infinity Pool atop a 55 storey building, Infinity London. According to the technical director, Alex Kemsly, the 600,000 litres pool was conceptualised before even thinking about how to prop it in the sky. It is thus safe to say that the open-air Infinity Pool atop the 220 metres tall building is set to be the showpiece of the building, and possibly the world, if realised.

The 360° Infinity Pool is probably the most avant-gardist of its kind. Not only do the four sides provide an uninterrupted view of the London skyline, but even the base of the Pool is also transparent. To further enhance the Pool’s transparency, Kemsly settled for cast acrylic over glass because it transmits light at a similar wavelength to water, giving pool-users a crystal clear view of the beautiful London vista and the sanctum beneath. It will almost be like an aquarium teeming with hyped pool-users swimming around while curious (and bewildered) hotel guests observe from below.

A Submarine Door?

Before we romanticise the Pool, we cannot but wonder about its practicalities. As seen from Compass Pool’s rendering, there are no side ladders or obvious entry point into the Pool. When interviewed, Alex Kemsly explained, “Normally a simple ladder would suffice, but we didn’t want stairs on the outside of the building or in the pool as it would spoil the view— and obviously you don’t want 600,000 litres of water draining through the building either.” To visionary Kemsly, that is enough impetus to adopt the idea of a submarine’s hatch door to engineer a James Bond-esque rotating spiral staircase for the swimmers’ entry and exit.

Thrilling as it sounds, it is still worthy of questioning its efficacy. A point of contemplation—India’s $3 billion submarine, Arihant, sunk due to a mindless human error of forgetting to seal the hatch while in harbour. Admittedly, the rotating spiral stairwell won’t be sinking, but it might render claustrophobes extremely squeamish as water potentially floods into the compartment as the hatch opens for entry and exit. Additionally, the staircase cannot be made too large that it obstructs the passage of other pool-users. Ergo, it may lead to over-crowding—with the Infinity Pool set to be the centrepiece of the 55 storey building, will the rotating stairwell be fast enough to channel enthusiastic pool-users in and out of the Pool? Compass Pool’s rendering may depict a serene pool in the sky, but without seeing to those questions, it could potentially degenerate into a cramped pond of frustrated pool-users queuing to get out amidst the chilly windy backdrop.

Another obvious problem is that 220 metres up in the skies, the Pool is likely to be windswept and subject to the chilling temperature. Thankfully, some well-considered proposals are tackling those shortfalls. An anemometer will be installed and connected to a computer-controlled management system to prevent water from being swept off the sides of the Pool. Riding on the eco-friendliness tide, the Pool will be warmed using hot waste gases produced by the building’s air-conditioning system. Building an unprecedented facility is no piece of cake, but LUXUO is optimistic that it will be the pièce de résistance if Kemsly keeps pace with his ingenious solutions.

Perhaps a literal adaptation of the figurative, the full-spectrum of multi-coloured lights adorning the see-through Pool will make it the sparkling gem of London’s skyline that awes and inspires from afar.

Construction of Infinity London (and the Infinity Pool atop) may commence as early as 2020 if the partners, contractors and location are finalised.

The Edison Hotel Penang: Home Away From Home

Alluring heritage, timeless design, diverse culture and affordable luxury.

Seated on the edge of a UNESCO World Heritage site along the bustling street of Lebuh Leith—named after the first Lieutenant-Governor of the Prince of Wales Island, Sir George Alexander William Leith—is a quaint boutique hotel that serves as an excellent addition to the successful restoration and rehabilitation of distinctive colonial architecture in Penang’s capital city.

Before The Edisonopened its doors in 2016, the property first started out as a local tycoon’s private mansion in the early 1900s, transitioning from one owner to the other. However, it was not until developer Eugene Tan—son of veteran hotelier and ET Hospitality Ventures founder Eddie Tan—stepped in and put it through an extensive two-year renovation that brought the building to its current form.

Since then, The Edison has gone on to redefine Penang’s boutique hotel experience, and its encouraging first year in operations was capped with a few awards and accolades including World Luxury Hotels Awards 2017 and World Boutique Hotel Awards 2017 for its hospitality design and outstanding service.

Grandeur instantly comes to mind as one enters the restored colonial mansionand takes in its meticulously designed quirky interior that expertly combines both old and new elements. The painstaking effort to salvage most of its existing structure is certainly evident in its grand staircase, open-air courtyard and genuine Peranakan tileswhile each space is further highlighted with touches of idiosyncrasy such as the panels of porcelain blue and rich jade adorning the lobby walls.

The Lounge, combining both breakfast venue and communal lounge, is the perfect gathering place for guests to socialise, reflect and work. Most locals will appreciate the unlimited childhood snacks provided at the self-service counters like lemon tablets, hawflakes and roti kapai which give off a touch of nostalgia. Other facilities such as an outdoor swimming pool for a leisurely dip and a library to browse through the shelves of books are offered as well.

As you adjourn to the guestroom, the first thing that will capture your attention is the unusual feature of the bathroom being placed directly opposite the entry door—a result of the structure’s primordial layout. Its Art Deco detailing, on the other hand, exudes a perfect balance of charm and contemporary chic. One cannot help but feel completely at home as the large, charming space offers everything from a basket of fruits to good quality bed and linen, and shower amenities by luxury Australian skincare brand, Appelles.

Outside the hotel, one continues to discover the allure of the vibrant island as it is smack right in middle of various tourist attractions such as Chinese shophouses, museums, food courts and old British colonial buildingsto satisfy fellow foodies, shutterbugs and shopaholics to cap off a pleasant stay in the capital city of Penang.

The Japanese brand, which sells everything from clothing to homeware and is known for its minimalist esthetic, will be opening its newest hotel project in Tokyo’s posh Ginza district in the spring of 2019.

The news comes after the company announced plans to open a branded hotel in China’s Shenzhen province by the end of the year.

To be housed in a sprawling 10-storey mixed-use commercial building complex, the tentatively named Muji Hotel will occupy the last four floors of the building.

The building will also house a sprawling retail space named Muji Goods, which will become the chain’s global flagship store.

Muji is the latest company to make the transition from interior décor and furniture retailer to hotel development.

American brands West Elm and Restoration Hardware are also developing properties across the US, using the popularity of their brands as a jumping-off point.

Restoration Hardware’s first property will open in New York’s meatpacking district as a 14-room boutique hotel, while West Elm announced plans to open properties in markets like Savannah, Detroit and Minneapolis beginning 2018.
