The Ten Most Expensive Handbags in The World

Photo: Instagram @kyliejenner

While fashion houses like Hermès and Mouawad are known to break records for designing and producing the most expensive luxury products from factory to shelf, the most expensive known luxury bag to date is actually up-cycled with materials from pre-loved items. Below, we have compiled a list of the ten most expensive bags in the world and their celebrity owners.

Debbie Wingham Egg Bag

Valued at a staggering US$6.7 million, this Debbie Wingham Bag made history as the most expensive bag in the world since it was revealed by celebrity couturier Wingham in 2019 as a special order for a mystery buyer from the US. The unknown client sent in designer items from seasons past specifically for Wingham to incorporate into the bag. Who would’ve thought that the world’s most expensive bag would be created using pre-loved items?

The upcycled purse is adorned with 8,000 diamonds, lined with an Hermès scarf and fastens with a pair of US$40,000 Cartier earrings, yet the most luxurious part of this this meticulously crafted bag is the real Emu egg as the core which was strengthened with enamel made from blue diamond dust.

Mouawad 1001 Nights Diamond Purse

Photo: Instagram @christieshandbags

Standing at US$3.8 million is the Mouawad 1001 Nights Diamond Purse. This heart-shaped diamond piece was most famously featured in the Guinness Book of World Records as 2011’s “World’s Most Expensive Bag”. Breaking records is a standard for Mouawad who previously held records for the most valuable jewellery box, necklace and bra.

Designed by renowned Lebanese jeweller Robert Mouawad, the purse incorporates 4,517 diamonds, of which 105 are yellow 56 are pink and 4,356 are colourless. This timeless piece of luxury took the skill of 10 artisans working continuously for over 8,000 hours to complete.

Hermès Kelly Rose Gold

Photo: Instagram @birkinbagforsale

The Hermès Kelly in Rose Gold is worth US$2 million with only 12 pieces created. Designed by Hermès in collaboration with Pierre Hardy, a renowned French jeweller and shoe designer, the Kelly was fashioned out of solid rose gold manipulated to resemble crocodile leather, delicately embellished with 1,160 diamonds. The size of the Kelly, however, is so small that it can barely hold a pair of sunglasses, leading some to call it more a piece of jewellery worn around the wrist rather than a functioning bag.

Hermès Birkin by Ginza Tanaka

Photo: Instagram @velvey.jpg

Japanese designer Ginza Tanaka’s Hermès Birkin takes fourth place on the list with a price tag of US$1.4 million. This unique Birkin, made in 2008, features 2,000 diamonds embellished on its exterior and a detachable pear-shaped 8-karat diamond which can be worn as a brooch. The strap is also removable, conveniently transforming into a diamond necklace to match the brooch.

Hermès Chaine’d Ancre Bag

Photo: Instagram @newbondstreetpawnbrokers

Next on the list is the Hermès Chaine’d Ancre Bag set at US$1.4 million, created in collaboration with jeweller Pierre Hardy in 2012. Working on this bag took hardy two years to perfect, resulting in only three pieces of this particular design. The bag, encrusted with 1,160 diamond-encrusted chain links, gained particular interest for its controversial themes and allusions to prison imagery.

Lana Marks Cleopatra Clutch

Photo: Pinterest @finances0nline

A Lana Marks’ Cleopatra Clutch ranges anywhere between US$100,000 to US$400,000. The range in costs is owing to how a new Cleopatra Clutch is uniquely produced every year, each with a different colour and design. The most expensive variant is owned by famed Chinese artiste, Li Bingbing.

As seen in the image above, Li’s name was specially inscribed in pink gold for her clutch. Lana Marks designed Li’s clutch in American alligator leather and 1,600 white diamonds to match the star’s outfit for the red carpet. Indeed, the Cleopatra Clutch has been a long-time staple for red carpet superstars since the 2000s, appearing on the hands of A-listers such as Helen Mirren and Angelina Jolie.

Hermès Niloticus Crocodile Himalaya Birkin

Photo: Pinterest @fallonjewelry

This list would not be complete without the famous Hermès Niloticus Crocodile Himalaya Birkin. Valued at US$379,000, this 30cm model was made from the skin of the Nile crocodile put through an extensive dyeing process to lighten its tone.

Making headlines on the arms of celebrities, the bag was seen on the likes of Kim Kardashian as she casually carried it along to a football game as well as her mother, Kris Jenner, and sister, Kylie Jenner.

Feather Embroidery Sellier Mosaïque Kelly 32 with Palladium Hardware

Photo: Pinterest @christiesinc

This Sellier Kelly was auctioned at Christie’s for US$352,825 in 2010, most recognisable for the distinct mosaic weave on the body in neutral, earthy tones.

Hermès Matte Alligator Faubourg Birkin

Photo: Pinterest @saclab

The Hermès Faubourg Birkin was named after the House’s flagship store in Paris, the front of the bag hand-stitching different types of alligator leathers together to the likeness of the Faubourg storefront.

This Birkin not only demonstrates the skilful craftsmanship of Hermès ateliers, but also serves a homage to Hermès history. The Faubourg Birkin was sold for US$320,000 in 2022.

Chanel Diamond Forever Handbag

Photo: Pinterest @advancestyle

Last but definitely not least is the Diamond Forever handbag by Chanel standing at US$261,000. This bag was designed by the famous Karl Lagerfeld. Painstakingly handcrafted from a chalk white crocodile leather, bag allows the 344-diamond Chanel logo on the clasp to take centre stage. This limited edition piece is high in value due to its scarcity, only 13 of them in the world.

Montblanc Celebrates Writing — High Artistry & Rich Stories

In the realm of writing and mountaineering, German brand Montblanc remains at the forefront of capturing the luxury market, telling captivating stories, and offering the best of exquisite writing instruments.

Montblanc’s artful masters put their souls into creating pieces that symbolise the values that shape the brand and products that are made to withstand the test of time, which clearly shows in the quality and craftsmanship. Like the mountain itself, the Richemont-owned brand is unyielding in being the leader in what they do.

The First Ascent of the Mont Blanc

In honouring the first ascent of the Mont Blanc summit, Europe’s highest peak, and the pioneering spirit of the Maison, Montblanc has unveiled a limited-edition collection of stunning writing instruments. Taking craftsmanship to greater heights, the High Artistry The First Ascent of the Mont Blanc Limited Edition features five detailed and grand designs, each with its unique appeal and shine.

“A tribute to pioneers, glaciers and mountaineering”, indeed. In all five pens, the maîtres d’art of the Montblanc Artisan Atelier showcased a wide variety of time-honoured skills like marquetry, enamelling, and intricate stone setting.

For instance, the Montblanc Limited Edition 5 combines precious metals and gemstones “in a symphony of subtle tributes to the history of alpinism on the Mont Blanc massif”. The cap is wrapped with the majestic mountain in rare artisan marquetry work and seventeen different shades and materials — delicate parchment, sparkling mother-of-pearl, leathers and a selection of premium woods. Its clip is a replica of the alpenstock and axe, two of the most essential tools used by the first climbers to reach the summit of Mont Blanc in 1786. To top it all off, the nib is handcrafted from Au 750 solid rose-tone gold, decorated with a three-dimensional edelweiss flower and a cognac-coloured sapphire.

As for the Montblanc Limited Edition 10, the cap is made from the mountain’s granite and refined with a lacquered engraving of ‘JqB 1786’ — the initials of mountaineer Jacques Balmat and the year of the first ascent. And on the top of the cap is a detachable rounded rock crystal with the Mont Blanc massif beautifully shaped in the centre. In reference to Balmat’s search for gold, the space created within the mountain massif is occupied by unrefined Au 750 solid yellow gold.

These decorative pens are the perfect addition to the pocket of your suit jacket. With proud narratives radiating from every part of these pens, each one is a luxurious accessory to have in hand while you tell new stories and make your mark on paper.

Montblanc Haus

Another climb up the plateau. On Tuesday, 10 May, the luxury manufacturer officially opened the Montblanc Haus in Hamburg, Germany. The sleek, black building is exactly what one would expect of a classy brand like Montblanc. It is situated right beside Montblanc’s headquarters and its production facilities for its resin writing instruments and hand-ground gold nibs.

During the opening of Hamburg’s newest landmark, VIP guests from around the world attended the special event — having a first look inside the impressive building and being inspired by Montblanc’s role in shaping the culture of writing. The esteemed guests include Oscar Isaac, Peggy Gou, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Daniel Brühl, Feng Tang, Waris Ahluwalia and Jamie Cullum. Like every visitor to step into Montblanc’s world of writing and craftsmanship, these guests were invited to explore the incredible power of handwriting, as well as the creativity, imagination and emotion it unlocks in everyone.

A tribute to the art of writing and reminiscent of the brand’s historic pen packaging, the three-story building houses exhibition spaces, writing ateliers, a café, a boutique, an archive and an academy. The immersive brand experience — which is a must for many as it becomes a norm for luxury houses to push out the most unforgettable experiences — is a place to inspire writing.

Nicolas Baretzki, Montblanc’s CEO, said it is about celebrating writing. “We want people to understand why handwriting is important; what are all the philosophical and cultural ideas behind writing? If people leave with some excitement and inspiration, I believe we have done the right job,” he shared, as per WWD.

Inside, you can find High Artistry pens adorned with diamonds, eye-catching Art Deco advertising posters and clients’ penmanship from across the globe. There is even a small leather book with autographs of The Beatles. Other than the stories of Montblanc, from the founding days to the precise crafters and the brand’s progress, Mountblanc Haus teaches all the art of writing and is devoted to spectacular stories that are yet to be written.

According to executive vice president of marketing Vincent Montalescot, Montblanc Haus was “five years in the making, with teams digging deeply in the archives”.

“The Montblanc Haus has allowed us to uncover some treasures from our archive that we are eager to share with the world. This experience is not only dedicated to all the incredible stories that have been written over time including our very own, but to all the great stories that are yet to be written, as we invite our visitors to be inspired to leave their mark”, said Montalescot.

The Montblanc Haus will be open to the public from 16 May 2022. The landmark’s first temporary exhibition, “30 Years of the Patron of Arts“, celebrates the Patron of Art limited edition for over 30 years and promotes the idea of ‘collecting’. This exhibition will be open to visitors until October 2022.

Unwavering Growth

Instead of falling short in sales or worrying about convincing customers, Montblanc is seemingly doing well. Baretzki said the company is over pre-Covid-19 figures and that “the big challenge these days is producing enough to meet demand”.

The brand is managing a spike in demand for its high-priced products, not something that most would expect since everything is extremely digitalised now. Additionally, its recent collaboration with Ferrari, a blazing red Great Characters Enzo Ferrari Special Edition Ballpoint Pen, reportedly sold out in a few days. Montblanc, if anything, is sure to stay above and beyond summits while meeting the expectations of its customers.

Moving onwards, Montblanc is uncovering a new theme and collection by its artistic director Marco Tomasetta. The event will be on 22 June in Paris, during Men’s Fashion Week.

Imperial’s Julia Stewart looks at the big picture

Can you paint an overview of Imperial and how it has become associated with so many of the biggest superyacht projects?

We believe in a detail-orientated approach as we are handling legendary superyachts. We leave nothing to chance and supervise every detail. Our yachts are very popular choices for charter because of high service standards, safety without compromises and perfect technical condition.

Our Monaco office is the heart of our activity and we also have offices located at leading shipyards in Germany, Netherlands and Italy to supervise new builds and refits on a day-to-day basis to protect owners’ interests. We have large new build and operational teams managing over 1,000 crew members worldwide. In addition, we have skilled HR and in-house legal teams.

How has Imperial’s business changed in the last few years as you’ve become known for working with some of the world’s biggest new superyachts?

We have sold more new-build projects and are currently supervising constructions at major European yards. Imperial is doing more hulls in the 100m-plus segment because we have proven management expertise and the specialist knowledge to control budgets as well as deliver the best result for the owners.

Imperial is the exclusive charter agent for the 136m Flying Fox, built by Lürssen; © Imperial Yachts (Photo: Guillaume Plisson)

Our delivered yachts speak for themselves. Imperial supervised construction and are Exclusive Central Charter Agents for Lana (Benetti 107m) and Flying Fox (Lürssen 136m). Furthermore, we are also experts in new construction such as Amadea (Lürssen 106.1m).

How would you rank the value of your various business divisions?

Imperial does not rely on one area of business, yet we have a firm core foundation based on the supervision of new builds and management, as well as strong sales and charter departments.

What are some of the projects that have elevated Imperial in term of recognition and earned the respect of your competitors?

Imperial respects the success of all brokerage firms as we believe healthy competition inspires us to do our best, not simply ‘good enough’. Imperial is unique because we have delivered more new build projects than any other brokerage house in the past decade.

Friedrich Lürssen, Imperial CEO Evgeniy Kochman, Julia Stewart and Peter Lürssen

We have technical, operational and interior managers that follow a meticulous management style. Our success stands out among the industry , with vessels such as Flying Fox, Lana, RoMEA (Abeking & Rasmussen 81.8m) and Lili (Amels 55m) creating a new standard of charter. Imperial is the owner’s representative and supervisor for operational, technical and interior aspects.

Imperial is smaller than some other companies in your sector. Would you like to scale up in terms of staffing and offices?

We utilise a different strategy as we have less sales offices but more on-site offices at major German, Dutch and Italian shipyards. Imperial supervises the new construction from these offices and therefore has real-time updates and can facilitate the owner’s requests right away.

Having all hands on deck is a real strength of ours. With the development of Covid-19, it became even more evident that we do not need many sales offices to succeed but we must have substance and a strong operational core.

Which builders have you worked with most often in new builds?

Imperial has had the privilege to work with pioneers among the leading European shipyards. We have learnt from each other and share the same qualities of being detail-orientated, as well as to always protect the owner’s interest. In close collaboration with these shipyards, we have set high expectations and standards with the yards we choose to work with in the future.

Can you tell us about Imperial’s role as owner’s representative and build supervisor for the 120m Project Signature with Amels/Damen?

Imperial has a long-standing relationship with Amels/Damen as together we have built over 10 successful hulls over the past years . We have huge respect for the leaders of the Damen family and high regard as to how they support their clients with warranty and assistance. We firmly believe that Amels/Damen was the right shipyard for this ingenious vessel. Project Signature will raise the bar for design complexity within the yachting industry.

Imperial is the owner’s representative and build supervisor for the 120m Project Signature designed by Espen Øino

Project Signature will be a ‘green’ superyacht prepared for the Lloyd’s Register of Shipping EP (Environment Protection) notation, powered by diesel-electric engines and Azipod propulsion. Do you notice more owners showing more interest in the environment?

As a result of constructing larger vessels, future owners will continue to seek out new destinations and new platforms for adventure. With a shift in demographic, younger clients are looking for more experience-led activities through unique itineraries and on-board amenities. Wanderlust also comes with a desire to be environmentally conscious.

Our oceans, marine life and the surrounding shores are under threat. Today, the industry is more in tune with the climate change and clients request or are open to innovative engineering solutions or sustainable yacht designs with the end goal of reducing their yachting footprint.

Can you tell us anything about other upcoming builds that Imperial are involved in?

Imperial is dedicated to the protection of our client’s confidentiality. Imperial can confirm we have major new construction projects at leading German, Dutch and Italian shipyards. All I can say is, stay tuned!

Espen Øino designed Project Signature, Flying Fox and many other builds Imperial has worked on. Why does the company have such a special relationship with him?

Imperial is a Monaco-based company and is proud to have Monaco as part of its company heritage. We firmly believe in supporting the local economy and working with local talent. Espen Øino is the man behind some of the most iconic superyachts. He has an extraordinary talent and is effectively in sync with Imperial.

Building a superyacht to fit your needs is an exciting experience. The first footstep to constructing a new vessel is to find the right designer who understands your requirements. Espen’s success is how he manages expectations, establishes priorities and finds the balance between each space on board. In partnership with Espen Øino, Imperial has delivered many recognisable superyachts such as Amadea and Flying Fox.

The 106.1m Amadea, designed by Espen Øino and built by Lürssen, is exclusively listed for sale with Imperial; © Imperial Yachts (Photo: Guillaume Plisson)

How has Covid changed your business and impacted the different sectors of your business?

Covid-19 has been a major challenge for everybody. Nobody is exempt. We were the first management company to do mass testing for all crew on a regular basis to ensure the safety of guests and crew. Imperial developed Covid-19 prevention measures for the managed fleet. Given the high standards of safety on board the managed fleet, all charter yachts managed by Imperial are in high demand.

With the closure of many destination retreats, Imperial has found the perfect answer for those who are seeking a place to detach and improve their wellbeing while being in a clinically clean environment.

The wellness centres on board Flying Fox and Lana incorporate all aspects of personal wellness, using both a holistic and scientific approach. Imperial’s charter team has carefully selected safe destinations to charter where guests can choose how much interaction they want with life on land while adhering to local Covid regulations.

Overall, what do you think are the biggest challenges to the superyacht industry?

Indeed, the global recession presents new complexities to the superyacht industry. In our opinion, true professionals that are meticulous in advancing in operational and new build management will prevail. Overall, the quality and expertise of the industry will gradually improve.

What more should the superyacht industry be doing to make the yachts and their operations more environmentally friendly?

Technological advances in design and build of superyachts has helped bring more sustainable solutions on board. More money and time are being spent on building greener vessels to lessen their impact on the marine environment. This is encouraging and demonstrates that technology can help. Imperial is providing its support by partnering with Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE) and joining the Blue Marine Yacht Club (BMYC) to help save and protect our ocean.

BLUE’S BMYC private event on board Amadea in 2019, kindly supported by Imperial and Lürssen, was the most successful BMYC event that BLUE has held to date. The event was extremely well attended with BMYC supporters and new supporters from the industry. A large sum of money was raised that night including a very large donation by Imperial.

The evening marked a turning point in financial support for many of BLUE’s projects, especially its work in the UK Overseas Territories and Ascension Island.

What are the biggest opportunities for growth in the superyacht sector in the coming years?

We live in a world where the only constant thing is change. Developments in technology allow the ability to innovative and enhance just about any sector. The yachting industry is no exception. At Imperial, ‘Luxury Yachting 360 degrees’ is not just our company motto, it is what sets us apart. We provide a full-spectrum approach from initial concept, finance, design and construction to management, charter, maintenance and marketing.

‘Luxury Yachting 360 degrees’ is Imperial’s motto

What are your plans for the coming years?

Imperial has changed the future of yachting by delivering some of the most advanced superyachts. Imperial orchestrates the relationship between client, designer and shipyard, so we will continue with our proactive and inspired approach to superyachts delivered and currently in construction.

We push boundaries with the future in mind. We have a detail-orientated approach in everything we do including new build supervision at major yards, operational and technical management, and a very successful charter operation.

Explore Luxury Vacation Homes To Escape To And Indulge In

Essential design trends in vacation homes bring intangible value to escapism-centred destination properties.

Whether a mountain cabin or a luxury villa in the Caribbean, while everyone may have a slightly different idea of what their vacation home might look like, at the root of the aspiration is the promise of an escape from the ordinary. Not surprisingly, many design trends for vacation properties reflect the intangible qualities that go beyond the basic practical considerations of typical home designs. Luxury add-ons and unique offerings, akin to those provided at élite resorts, are all the rage and can make a property a desirable alternative to a primary home, setting it up as a unique sell above other available offerings to vacation home seekers.

Uluwatu Villa designed by SAOTA, Bali, Indonesia

Beyond the aspirational qualities, a permanent vacation destination presents an opportunity of investment with a tangible use – an asset that can provide an additional income and a personal escape alike. Treating design as an investment, vacation home design trends reach beyond the utilitarian considerations to craft luxurious and unforgettable experiences, homes built on dreams where users can immerse themselves into their versions of hedonism at their finest.

Location, Location

Vacation homes are intrinsically connected to their locations. Buyers, first and foremost, choose to buy a vacation home because they enjoy spending time at that particular destination or know others who would enjoy the same. Thus, a vacation home must offer an immersive experience that connects an owner with its context. This means designing spaces that maximise on the views of the outside scenery or blur the boundaries between the inside and the outside with transparent, open spaces that link exterior landscapes with internal settings.

Pool deck belonging to Uluwatu Villa, Bali, Indonesia

Oneness with the environment creates an irreplicable sense of luxury that capitalises on the biggest asset of a vacation home – its location. This can lend a home an unforgettable and unique character that no physical design can match. A smart design that recognises this advantage is, thus, invaluable to ensure that the selling features of the destination, whether it is the sea, the mountains, the vast openness of nature or the dense skyline of a big city, are featured as prominently as the property itself.

Live Well

An aspect synonymous to the term “vacation” is that of wellness. With wellness tourism on the rise, vacation homes are not only following but also setting the trends when it comes to wellness living concepts. From heat reflexology flooring to indoor and outdoor yoga rooms, to meditation gardens, these add-on features expand the opportunities and modes of relaxation within vacation properties, with interior designers and architects creating buildings that are sanctuaries designed to promote healthy ways of unwinding.

In wellness-minded vacation homes, wellness also comes through in usage of materials and in choices made within the physical design. Local, natural, repurposed and reclaimed materials convey the sense of harmony with the surroundings, while commissioned craft elements lend a certain human tactility to a vacation home. Properties designed to maximise light and air circulation promote the basic and almost unnoticeable but integral aspects of well-being that can transform a vacation home into a wellness sanctuary.

A Dose of Simplicity

While not immediately obvious, a vacation home offers a chance to escape not only from the mundane of the everyday but also the everyday clutter. Devoid of the unnecessary, the enjoyment of the experience itself can become a central feature, where simple décor can offer the necessities, while the unneeded extras are mindfully omitted. This simplicity can translate into the smallest details of vacation home design – everyday features like air conditioning grilles, window frames, garbage disposals can be minimised to create uninterrupted surfaces and enhance the openness and quality of a residence.

Touches of Luxury

While simplicity keeps a mind clear, it is a chance to experience a bit of luxury that sets the truly unforgettable vacation properties apart from the rest. High-quality materials, add-on features and bespoke furniture go a long way to create a luxury feel in a vacation lodging.

Cheetah Plains home by ARRCC in Kruger, South Africa

Luxury hotel amenities and facilities are also making their way into the designs of vacation homes. From outdoor theatres to wine cellars, designers are bringing unique elements into residential settings, as more and more vacation property owners are influenced by five-star resort designs and want to recreate the look and feel of luxury hotels. This means a no-expense-spared approach: rare and luxurious materials, custom-made ironmongery and furniture to reflect individualistic lifestyle preferences. Going beyond the luxury hotel-inspired design, exclusivity is the key and customised solutions can drive personalised to ensure that every single feature is designed to the owner’s personal taste.

MCY 66 Continues Monte Carlo Yachts’ Second Chapter

There is a particular line on the MCY 66 that you can’t help but notice. It begins at the bow and sweeps gently past broad shoulders, beneath the flybridge supports and tapers to a delicate summit at the transom.

Designed by Nuvolari-Lenard, the MCY 66 is the second Monte Carlo Yachts release of 2019

It’s so simple and elegant, but it gives the boat an unmistakable profile and, for a craft over 20m in length and 36 tonnes, a tightness and proportional balance unique among its competition.

Carlo Nuvolari, who designed and engineered the 66 with Nuvolari-Lenard partner Dan Lenard, speaks of ‘evolution not revolution’ with this boat.

The MCY 65 it replaces was similarly attractive. The 66 is more cohesive, yet retains the recognisable Monte Carlo Yachts cues of flared bow, circular hull windows and the clamshell outline of the superstructure. In a world of high-sided floating apartments, the MCY 66 is a breath of fresh air.

The designers may refer to evolution, but the boat is no mere spruce-up of the 65. It’s an all-new boat from top to bottom, with a fresh hull design and a flybridge deck that’s the same size as that on the former MCY 70, a model succeeded this January by its namesake, the first of what the brand calls its ‘second generation’ of models, with the 66 next to arrive.

The flybridge is the same size as that on the former MCY 70, which has been succeeded by its namesake this year

In most areas, the 66 feels larger than it is, partly down to things like the part-covered side decks, substantial hardtop and intelligent foredeck, and partly due to the volume of the hull and the headroom this delivers within the accommodation.

The materials are a class above, too, especially the likes of purple Calcutta marble on the galley tops and saloon table. Expensive flourishes of this nature are not always expected on a boat of this size.

It’s the same story in the cockpit where the flybridge overhang, double access points from the bathing platform, substantial mooring gear and space for freestanding chairs around the table add to the impression that you’ve stepped aboard a bigger craft. This, after all, is a range that started life in 2010 with a 76 and has a 105 as its flagship, so the Italian yard knows a thing or two about building boats on such a scale.

OUTDOOR SELECTION

It’s hard to choose between the deck spaces because they all offer something a little different. The cockpit is well protected and within easy reach of the aft galley in the saloon.

Among the finest in its class, the Portuguese bridge styled foredeck allows easy passage from side to side, while the central walkway offers a superyacht feel

The flybridge feels vast and is versatile thanks to the sunroof embedded within the hardtop, plus a wetbar with all the amenities needed to keep guests fed and watered.

And the foredeck is quite possibly the finest in the class apart from Galeon’s 640. Its Portuguese bridge style allows easy passage from side to side and the central walkway has a superyacht feel about it.

The entire area can be shaded with a Bedouin-style canvas and it’s an ideal spot for some secluded sundowners if you’re moored stern to the quay.

LIGHT INTERIOR

The main deck has a cool, beachy vibe due to a décor featuring a light palette with dark highlights in the flooring and Venetian blinds. Light sycamore makes up the bulk of the woodwork and lends brightness to an interior that’s already endowed with a generous supply of natural light because of massive saloon windows.

The aft galley to port connects well with the cockpit, which has plenty of space for chairs around the table

There isn’t as much natural light on the lower deck, but intelligent use of indirect artificial lighting offers an inviting warmth that’s welcome in the sleeping spaces. The full-beam master suite feels huge and is without obstructions on the floor or overhead until you get close to the aft end.

There’s space for a stylish vanity station in the entrance hall and the walk-around bed is flanked by comfortable low-slung sofas. There’s thoughtful detailing down here as well, like the rose-gold wraps on drawer and cupboard handles, as well as a chunky, leather-encased handhold that runs from floor to ceiling on the bathroom bulkhead.

Guest accommodation comprises a VIP en-suite forward and a twin cabin to starboard, which also has an en-suite, although it plays the part of day head, too. The VIP is obviously the pick of the guest cabins, but the twin is as well finished as the double cabins and has a decent amount of natural light through attractive portholes.

For crew, there’s a well-appointed twin cabin aft, with shower and toilet, accessed via a door in the transom. It’s compact, so not ideal for long periods at sea, but will do the job for the occasional overnight stay.

Benefiting from a light palette, the split-level saloon features the main lounge forward, while aft, one step down, is the dining area opposite the galley

COMFORTABLE CRUISE

Both helm stations suffer the same pitfalls of not-enough adjustment and driving positions that do little to engage the person at the helm. This is a boat set up for cruising and will spend most of its life on autopilot, but it wouldn’t hurt to add some adjustment to the seats so the helmsman can sit closer to the major controls. They both lack storage for loose items, but the yard says it is looking into a solution.

The annoyances melt away in cruise, though, with the meaty yet refined Man 1,200hp V8s effortlessly driving the 66 through the water with very little to disturb the peace on board.

Even at its 26-knot cruising speed, sound levels remain well below 70 decibels and there is such effortlessness to its progress that long journeys won’t feel a chore. Although 30 knots is a perfectly achievable top speed, it’s the low to mid-20s where the boat feels most comfortable and at a laid-back cruise of 22 knots, the engines are using a combined 293 litres per hour.

The superb full-beam owner’s suite is midships, has storage and a sofa to the sides, and an elegant vanity table in the entrance hall

Fin or gyro stabilisers are offered on the 66, but the benign conditions of our sea trial did little to prompt the use of the Seakeeper fitted to the test boat. The fuel tanks are mounted midships and as low as they can possibly be in the hull, so weight distribution is good, meaning the boat has a comfortable natural running attitude without the need to rely on the trim tabs.

Monte Carlo Yachts has never been afraid to do things differently, be it the modular way in which it constructs its boats or the way they look. Chief Executive Fabrizio Iarrera makes the point that to encourage customers into the brand, you have to begin with the aesthetic, but with the MCY 66 the attraction runs far deeper than that.

It’s solidly engineered, attractively decorated and has some of the finest deck spaces in the sector. A case then, if ever there was one, of beauty being more than skin deep.

Penang RendezVous to host 2nd Edition in Oct 2019

After its successful inaugural edition in 2018, which had attracted over 3,000 visitors to Straits Quay Marina in Penang, the 3-day luxury lifestyle event Penang RendezVous is back for its second instalment this 11th to 13th October 2019.

Encompassing cars, yachts, art, fashion, entertainment and F&B, Penang RendezVous 2019 will once again be hosted at Straits Quay Marina to provide a luxury experience unlike any other seen in Malaysia, surrounded by a pristine marine environment.

With a long list of sea exhibitors like Pen Marine (including Princess Yachts, Jeanneau, Leopard catamarans, Amel), Simpson Marine (Monte Carlo Yachts, Beneteau Oceanis and Gran Turismo, Lagoon catamarans) and Hong Seh Marine (Ferretti yachts and Cranchi) showcased in the 2018 edition, visitors can expect an even better offering for 2019.

Also, we expect key luxury Hotelier partners G Hotel Kelawai and Shangri-La Rasa Sayang to return to support the event, along with the backing and support of the Penang State Tourism Board. On another note, we expect to see the return of Aditus, the world’s no. 1 luxury access platform for crypto-affluents, who has hosted exclusive gatherings and workshops for crypto-enthusiasts.

The 2018 edition was strongly backed by both local and international partners and sponsors, where an extensive number of yachts, cars and real estate were put on display for visitors throughout the fair with over 18 sea trials for attendees to experience and pamper in style.

Penang RendezVous slated for 11th to 13th October 2019 at Straits Quay Marina is the 2nd edition of the popular lifestyle series.
